Former City High standout Cade Obermueller didn’t have to wait long to hear his named called in the Major League Baseball draft.
An all-America pick following his junior season at the University of Iowa, Obermueller was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the second round of the MLB draft on Sunday.
Obermueller was the 63rd overall pick in the draft on Sunday joining his father Wes Obermueller as a MLB draft pick.
Wes Obermueller was a second-round pick of the Kansas City Royals in 1999.
Cade Obermueller was a 19th round pick by the Texas Rangers in 2024 but returned to Iowa where he emerged as one of the top pitchers in the country.
Obermueller was a first team all-Big Ten selection and earned third-] team all-America honors following a junior season in which he went 5-3 with a 3.02 ERA in 15 starts.
The left-handed throwing Obermueller struck out 117 in 83 1/3 innings last season, the second highest single season strikeout total in Iowa program history.
In 43 career games at Iowa Obermueller recorded an 11-7 record and a 3.60 ERA, striking out 226 in 165 innings.
A three-year starter at City High, Obermueller led the Little Hawks to the Class 4A state tournament in 2020 and 2022.
Obermueller posted a 7-1 record and 1.11 ERA with 103 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings as a senior in 2022.
A career .348 hitter for the Little Hawks, Obermueller recorded a 14-4 record and career 1.96 ERA at City High while striking out 168 batters in 107 1/3 career innings.
