DES MOINES – When the dust settled on the 2025 state track and field meet on Saturday evening West High found itself in a familiar position.
West High posted a third consecutive top-five team finish placing fifth with 53 points.
One of the big reasons for the Trojans’ recent string of success, senior Moustafa Tiea, added one final chapter to his incredible high school story on Saturday.
Tiea finished third in the Class 4A 800 to help West High lock up another top-five team finish.
“Knowing that I am able to leave the team on a high note means a lot more than anything I achieved,” Tiea said. “At the end of the day I am on Iowa City West not on team Moustafa Tiea.”
The defending 800 champion Tiea clocked a 1:52.96 while running in the opening heat on Saturday.
West Des Moines Dowling senior Owen Wolfe won the 800 in a time of 1:50.51 while Ankeny senior Ethan Zuber was runner-up in 1:52.53.
Tiea’s time of 1:52.96 out of the first heat was faster than the 1:54.24 that he ran while winning the 4A title a season ago.
“I look at it as with the cards that were given to me I did the best that I could,” Tiea said. “Whatever position I was put in I wanted to execute the best that I could.”
A pair of West High relays joined Tiea in adding to West High’s point total on Saturday.
The Trojan sprint medley relay foursome of Mason Woods, Harel Gameti, Julian Manson and Mason Goering finished seventh in a time of 1:31.62.
Cedar Falls won the sprint medley in a time of 1:30.19.
The West High shuttle hurdle relay team of Ely Smock, Waleed Ibrahim, Cade Towler and Ryder Gorsh finished seventh in a time of 1:02.52.
Ankeny won the shuttle hurdle relay in a state meet record time of 56.06 while Waukee Northwest was runner-up in 56.16 and Cedar Rapids Kennedy was third in 56.55.
