DES MOINES – After a 16th place finish in the shot put at the state meet last season Landon Prince left Drake Stadium unsure he had what it took to win a state title.
“I truly didn’t think I was strong enough,” Prince admitted on Friday. “I didn’t think I had the technique for it.”
A year later Prince didn’t just win the state title he once believed to be out of reach he completed an unprecedented season in which he ruled the prep throwing world statewide.
Prince capped his incredible final season with a second state title in as many days on Friday winning the Class 3A shot put title with a throw of 60-9 ¼.
“I put all of my eggs into this basket over the summer and I don’t know what to say,” Prince said. “I am really happy.”
The shot put title caps an incredible season for Prince in which he went unbeaten in throwing competition.
Last month Prince became the sixth Iowa prep in history to sweep the discus and shot put titles at the Drake Relays.
On Thursday Prince won the 3A discus crown with a toss of 181-10.
“No way, no way, I never would have thought it,” Prince said of his success. “I am so happy and I keep say it is so awesome but it is so awesome.”
The successful end to Prince’s career is even more impressive considering where he started.
His personal best throw in the shot put as a freshman was 31-8 ½.
A year later he threw 37-3 as a sophomore and last season the throw that earned him 16th at the 3A state meet was 49-9 ¼.
In his final prep season Prince added a whopping 14 feet to his career-best mark in the shot put, owning the best throw in the state this season at 64-1 ½.
His winning throw of 60-9 ¼ was 11 feet further than he threw at state a year ago.
“Landon is going to be the gold standard of development from freshman to senior year when all is said and done,” Clear Creek Amana coach Ben Robison said. “We have a roster full of these kinds of kids but what he has done as far as improvement is amazing. I’m so happy for him.”
An Iowa commit, Prince outdistanced runner-up Garrett Kluesner of Western Dubuque by more than two feet.
Algona junior Max Nevitt finished third with a toss of 57-3 and Washington sophomore Greyson Hartman was fourth at 55-4 ¾.
“I am really so grateful for all of this,” Prince said. “I did not think that I would be going to Iowa and I think that has taken a lot of pressure off my back and allowed me to have even more fun with this.”
The Clear Creek Amana 4×200 relay team of Brayden Frank, Joey Dains, Adam Zeman and Owen Rosenberg finished fifth and set a new school record with a time of 1:28.49.
Clear Creek Amana is tied for fifth in the 3A team standings with 224 points entering the final day of the three-day meet.
