DES MOINES – Landon Prince called it crazy.
His head coach described it as wild.
Regardless of the adjective used to describe it the senior season for Prince has been one of the record books.
Prince continued to cement his status as the best thrower in the state winning the Class 3A discus title on Thursday at the state track and field meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
The state title for Prince came after he became the sixth high school athlete in history to sweep the throwing events at the Drake Relays last month.
“It’s crazy to me,” Prince said. “Being able to win Drake and come here and win state it’s really a crazy feeling. I think it’s a testament to all the hard work I’ve put in and just having a really supportive group of people around me.”
Prince becomes the first Clear Creek Amana state champion in the discus and the second field event champion in program history joining Aren Schlemme who won the 3A long jump title last season.
The discus title continued what has been a breakthrough season for Prince who was fourth in the discus last season with a throw of 167-11.
“From the summer, traveling out to Nike Nationals that was huge for him, and then all winter he was just locked in and it was nothing but technique, technique, technique,” Clear Creek Amana coach Ben Robison said. “Then this season has just been wild.”
Prince entered with the top throw in the state this season at 194-4.
He outclassed the 3A field on Thursday winning the title with a toss of 181-10.
The winning throw for Prince was eight feet better than runner-up Carson McInerney of Sioux City Heelan.
“It’s awesome,” Robison said. “Especially when you get a field event kid that doesn’t get all the love that some of the other kids do and they are out here just killing it, it’s pretty cool to see.”
This spring has been an impressive rise to the top of the Iowa prep throwing world for Prince who committed to Iowa earlier this month.
Prince had three throws of better than 171-0 on his way to the title on Thursday.
“I am super excited,” Prince said. “Knowing that I am going (to Iowa) has taken a lot of stress off my back and I am very excited for what’s to come but I had a great high school season and I am super excited.”
Prince will look to add a shot put title to his resume on Friday morning.
“In discus I didn’t feel like I had made big strides until I started throwing in outdoor meets,” Prince said. “That’s when I really started to feel like I had turned that corner and probably when I won Drake that’s when this became really realistic. I’m just super excited.”
