West High seniors Marie Stier and Sasha Postnikov won a regional doubles title and put themselves in a position to play for a state crown all without ever getting more than a mile away from home.
The top-seeded West High doubles tandem of Stier and Postnikov rolled to the doubles title at the Class 2A, Region 5 meet at West High on Monday.
With the title the Trojan tandem secured a spot at the Class 2A state tournament set for May 30-31 at Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center in Iowa City.
Postnikov and Stier were dominant on their way to the regional title.
The duo didn’t drop a set in three matches on Monday winning the title match 6-1, 6-1 over the second-seeded Dubuque Hempstead tandem of Claire Kelley and Mya Hoden.
It was nearly an all-West High doubles final but the Hempstead team of Kelley and Hoden outlasted West High’s Iris Vasi and Grace Wang 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 in a marathon semifinal to earn a spot in the finals.
Postnikov and Stier were simply too much in the final, improving to 12-2 on the season and locking down a spot at the state meet with the straight set win.
The title match put the finishing touches on a strong day for Postnikov and Stier who defeated Gabbi Smith and Jordan Hancock of Dubuque Hempstead 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals.
Vasi and Wang finished third, defeating Hancock and Smith 6-4, 6-0 in the consolation final.
Cedar Rapids Jefferson junior Lily Holland won the singles title with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Noor Kassas of Dubuque Hempstead.
West High sophomore Sophia Singh defeated teammate Elsie Gross 6-2, 6-4 in the singles consolation match.
