MOUNT VERNON – Since Jessica Hotek took over the Solon girls track and field program the WAMAC Conference meet has been among the best meets the Spartans attend all season.
Hotek has never seen the WAMAC meet better than it was on Thursday.
On a night that saw nine conference records broken Solon battled to a fifth-place team finish at a loaded WAMAC Conference meet at Martha Parsons Family Athletic Complex in Mount Vernon.
“The WAMAC is always strong but I’ve never seen it this good,” Hotek said. “There were crazy times all around tonight.”
Host Mount Vernon won its second consecutive conference title with 162.5 points while Williamsburg was runner-up with 104.5 points.
Only 24 points separated third-place Marion (94 points) and sixth-place Clear Creek Amana (70 points) on a night where the best in the conference put on a show.
“I knew coming into this that the WAMAC is absolutely stacked so I am really happy with how we did today,” Clear Creek Amana junior Elizabeth Timmerman said. “I felt really good about how today went.”
Solon got top-three finishes from Kate Shafer in the discus, Jerzey Haluska in the 400 and freshman Addison Seamans in the 1,500 while racking up 71.5 points.
The Spartans closed the night with a third-place finish in the 4×400 relay to edge Clear Creek Amana for a spot in the top five of the team standings.
Shafer was runner-up in the discus with a mark of 129-8 and was fifth in the shot put (36-1 ¾).
Haluska was third in the 400 (59.13) and Seamans was third in the 1,500 (5:08.39).
The foursome of Quinn Armentrout, Haluska, Grace Hoeper and Kobi Lietz placed third in the 4×400 in 4:03.52.
“We definitely had some really good things and we had people step up to fill some holes that we had with the injuries that we have right now,” Hotek said. “I am really proud of how we competed tonight even though we are not necessarily at full strength right now and hopefully we will be by Thursday.”
Timmerman was part of a strong day for Clear Creek Amana.
The junior was third in the long jump (17-3) and fifth in the 200 in 26.04.
All four runners that finished in front of Timmerman in the 200 broke the previous WAMAC Conference record.
“We came here just looking to place well because we knew we had great competition around us,” Timmerman said. “That competition really pushed us today. It’s great running against competition this good.”
Timmerman joined Jaylin Herring, Addilyn Scheetz and Bailey Simpson on the 4×200 relay team that won in a school-record time of 1:44.9.
The foursome of Scheetz, Timmerman, Anna Johnson and Kendall Ronnfeldt set a school record in the 4×100 finishing third in 50.31.
“All season they have just gotten better and we came out of tonight with two school records,” Clear Creek Amana coach Ben Robison said. “This conference is just loaded so any time you can be in the top half I feel like it’s a huge win.”
