MOUNT VERNON – Clear Creek Amana has every intention to be in the thick of the Class 3A state title hunt later this month in Des Moines.
Before the Clippers turn their attention to a potential state championship they had some business to take care of at the WAMAC Conference meet.
Clear Creek Amana won six events and cruised to the team title at the WAMAC Conference meet on Thursday in Mount Vernon.
“This meet was definitely on the top of our list,” Clear Creek Amana sophomore Tay Seals said. “We really wanted to win the conference and show that we were good last year but we are even better now and we have all the guys to show it.”
Seals and Landon Prince each won a pair of individual titles and the Clippers won two relays while racking up 134 points to finish 27 points clear of runner-up Center Point-Urbana.
“Scoring points definitely takes priority today,” Prince said. “Getting points for the team is the number one priority and getting prs is second. At these big meets I just want to help the team as much as I can.”
Seals was a part of four of the six event titles for the Clippers on Thursday on his way to being named the most valuable performer of the meet by conference coaches.
The sophomore standout set conference meet records while winning the 100 (10.69) and 110 hurdles (14.1) and anchored the Clippers to titles in the shuttle hurdle and 4×100 relays.
“That was definitely a focal point was scoring points for the team,” Seals said. “We know every time we win an event we are helping the team and that feels great.”
Prince swept the throwing events, winning the discus with a WAMAC record throw of 191-2.
He won the shot put with a mark of 61-7 ¼.
“I felt good, discus was my most consistent series of good marks,” Prince said. “In shot put I know I have more there but I can’t be mad at it.”
Clear Creek Amana had a top-three finish in nine of 18 events, finished in the top-five in six relays and had two athletes score points in seven individual events.
“We’ve had a couple of really good teams come through and this team is probably got more of the team aspect and are looking out for each other more than we’ve ever had which is awesome,” Clear Creek Amana coach Ben Robison said. “Tonight, our whole thing was be a great teammate and go get points and here we are.”
The Clear Creek Amana shuttle hurdle relay team of Owen Rosenberg, Luke Higdon, Eliezer Mipata and Seals won in a WAMAC meet record time of 59.36.
The foursome of Brayden Frank, Adam Zeman, Rosenberg and Seals won the 4×100 in a time of 42.65 thanks in part to a strong anchor leg by Seals.
“I got the baton and I was like ‘I can definitely go get this guy’,” Seals said. “I pushed myself to the limit and I got him.”
Rosenberg was runner-up in the 200 in 22.58 and the Clippers were third in both the 4×800 and sprint medley relays.
The sprint medley team of Frank, Zeman, Joey Dains and Shane Jensen was third in 1:34.91.
Brock Hilsman, Isaac Sorensen, Carson Meskimen and Jackson VanHorn finished third in the 4×800 in 8:21.51.
“We really thought that we threw the best stuff out that we had and let it ride,” Robison said. “We had some adversity that we had to overcome but man they handled it really well. We’ve been preaching consistency and consistency builds resiliency and here we are.”
Solon finished eighth at the 12-team meet with 48 points.
Kaden Hoeper finished runner-up in the high jump clearing 6-2 and Caleb Bock was runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 21-0 to lead the Spartans.
Maddox Kelley finished third in the long jump with a jump of 20-8 ¼.
