Clear Creek Amana Senior Prince Wins Drake Relays Shot Put Title

DES MOINES – It has been an impressive start to the season for Clear Creek Amana senior Landon Prince.
It got even more impressive on Thursday.
In his Drake Relays debut Prince won the shot put title in dominating fashion posting a winning throw of 61-10 3/4 inside Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Prince led the competition from his first throw on Thursday while becoming the first Drake Relays champion in Clear Creek Amana history.
The state leader entering the event, every throw for Prince was over 58-9 ¼ and each of his final five attempts were better than the 58-11 posted by runner-up Greyson Hartman of Washington.
Prince has quickly emerged as one of the state’s top throwers this season.
Not only had Prince never qualified for the Drake Relays before this season he finished 16th at the Class 3A state meet in the shot put last fall.
An offseason filled with hard work has turned Prince into a Drake Relays champion.
Prince took an early lead and unloaded his best toss on his fifth attempt.
Hartman was the only other athlete to throw better than 57 feet.
Creston sophomore Tom Mikkelsen was third with a throw of 56-2 ¾ and West High freshman James Barnett was fourth with a toss of 55-11.
West High junior Collin Whitters placed ninth with a mark of 53-4 ½.
Prince will attempt to become the sixth prep athlete in Drake Relays history to sweep the throws on Friday when he competes in the discus.
Prince enters with the top mark in the discus this season at 182-2.
West High had an impressive opening day on Thursday as Mason Woods finished third in the long jump to join Barnett as top-five finishers for the Trojans.
Woods was third with a leap of 22-6 ½ while Miciah LeLaCheur of West Des Moines Valley won with a jump of 22-10.
Liberty High had a pair of sophomores post top-five finishes.
Victor Nakihinga finished in a tie for fourth in the high jump clearing 6-4 while sophomore Keegan Decker finished fifth in the 3,200 in a time of 9:05.11.
Bernard Grant of City High tied for fourth in the high jump clearing 6-4.
Liberty High junior Alexi Thigpen posted a top-five finish in the long jump.
Thigpen finished fifth with a jump of 17-7 while Clear Lake senior Reese Brownlee won with a jump of 18-10.
City High junior Rachel Haack finished seventh in the discus with a mark of 134-7.
