IOWA CITY – Mother nature provided a rare perfect weather day for a track meet on Saturday.
A couple of area athletes took full advantage at the Bob Brown Relays at Regina.
West Branch junior Brandon Pedersen and Regina junior Reese Naeve each won a pair of individual titles on Saturday to highlight strong opening performances for both teams at the co-ed seven-team meet in Iowa City.
“I don’t know if we will ever get this good of weather again for a long time,” Naeve said. “I definitely wanted to take advantage of that.”
Naeve won the high jump and the 100 hurdles to help Regina to a third-place finish in the girls meet.
West Liberty swept the team titles winning the boys title with 99 points and the girls team crown with 133 points.
West Branch was runner-up in both the boys and girls meet finishing with 90 points in the boys and with 96 points in the girls meet.
The Regina girls were third with 90 points behind Naeve and Avery Recker who won titles in the 100 and 200.
Naeve won the 100 hurdles in a time of 15.64 which was just off her career best time from a season ago.
“I went into it with a really positive mindset,” Naeve said. “I wanted to break 16 because I didn’t break 16 until later in the season, so I wanted to start off strong and see where I was going to be at.”
Naeve won the high jump by clearing 5-0 and added a third-place finish in the 200 in 28.24.
“I’ve always been able to jump high but its my form that takes me to the next level,” Naeve said. “That takes some time to get used to but I think it will be good.”
Recker won the 100 in 13.16 and the 200 in 27.48 for Regina while Harper Erwin won the 800 in 2:44.16 for the Regals and Ruby Eastman won the 1,500 in 5:52.15.
Grace Hamann won a pair of individual titles for West Branch, winning the 400 hurdles in 1:08.13 and the 400 in 1:01.19.
West Branch Senior Alyssa Pierce won the shot put with a toss of 39-7 1.2.
Pedersen stole the show in the boys meet, winning titles in the 100 and 200 and running the opening leg on the Bears’ winning 4×400 relay team.
“Before the day I was definitely a little nervous but that really just pushed me to get first,” Pedersen said. “It felt great.”
Pedersen won the 100 in 11.03 and blazed to the 200-meter title in a time of 22.52.
“That was the first 100 I’ve ran and distance wise I definitely like the 100 more but I feel I can get a better time in the 200 because I can stride out and to my top speed.”
Pedersen gave West Branch a large lead early on the opening leg of the 4×400 and the Bears closed out the win in a time of 3:40.97.
West Branch added a win in the 4×800.
“I’m just trying to work hard and get better every day,” Pedersen said. “I’m not sure what my exact goals are I just want to keep getting better.”
Regina got a title from Nathan Parizek in the discus with a mark of 135-5 and freshman Gabe Schuessler cleared 6-0 to win the high jump.
Regina also won the 4×100 relay.
