DES MOINES – Lucas Feuerbach locked up a state medal in his second appearance at the Class 2A state tournament on Thursday.
Feuerbach has his sights set on leaving Des Moines with a lot more than just his first career medal.
Third-ranked Feuerbach (46-3) advanced to the 215-pound title match with an emphatic 10-4 semifinal win over second-ranked Henry Christensen (36-4) of North Polk on Friday evening at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
“It feels great,” Feuerbach said. “Last year I lost a close one in the blood round and I’m coming for it all year this year and I’m not leaving any chances.”
Feuerbach went 2-2 at the state meet last season as a freshman.
He learned from that experience but was fueled by the disappoint of leaving his state meet debut empty handed.
“I learned I need to work hard and be better,” Feuerbach said. “I worked on my bottom, worked on my top, everything. I worked so much over the summer I deserve this.”
Feuerbach will bring a 23-match winning streak into the state title match on Saturday evening in a session that begins at 5:15 p.m.
Feuerbach will face will face top-ranked Glenwood junior Mason Koehler (41-4) in the 215-pound title match.
Koehler advanced to the title match with a third-period pin of fourth-ranked Chris Wrage of Central DeWitt in the other semifinal.
Feuerbach was dominant from the opening whistle in his semifinal win.
He scored the opening takedown with 14 seconds remaining and rode Christensen out to take a 3-0 lead into the second period.
“I knew it was stronger than him,” Feuerbach said. “I felt it as soon as I shook his hand and I used it to my advantage.”
Feuerbach added takedowns in each of the final two periods.
“I knew he was good, I just knew I was better,” Feuerbach said. “I had to be the aggressor all the time not just in the beginning.”
Feuerbach hasn’t loss since dropping a 10-6 decision to fifth-ranked Jeryn Funke of West Delaware on January 16, a loss Feuerbach avenged in the WAMAC Conference title match.
“I hate losing, it’s my least favorite thing, I’ve said it over and over again,” Feuerbach said. “I just hate it. I’m not going to do it.”
