DES MOINES – Solon sophomore Lucas Feuerbach had to wait all day for his opening match at the Class 2A state wrestling tournament.
When Feuerbach’s match finally came on Wednesday evening he didn’t waste any time advancing to the 2A quarterfinals.
Feuerbach (44-3) needed just 28 seconds to pin Creston’s Gunner Martwick in a 215-pound second-round contest at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Third-ranked Feuerbach will face No. 10 Dre Smithburg (42-5) of Fairfield in the quarterfinals on Thursday in a session that begins at 6 p.m.
“Obviously it felt good,” Feuerbach said. “I’ll have another good match tomorrow and then on to the semis.”
Feuerbach went 1-2 in his state tournament debut last season as a freshman.
A more comfortable, more confident Feuerbach was dominant in his return to the state tournament on Wednesday.
“It helps knowing where everything is and there are a lot of good kids, it’s a lot different than back home,” Feuerbach said. “I felt a lot more comfortable today than last year. I felt good.”
Feuerbach nearly found himself in trouble early in his second-round match against Martwick.
Martwick landed on top of Feuerbach as the two fell to the mat just seconds into the opening period.
However, Feuerbach quickly recovered for an opening takedown and immediately put Martwick on his back.
“It was a stupid move but I was able to battle back there,” Feuerbach said. “It worked out.”
Solon senior Charlie Karam went 1-1 on Wednesday at 138 pounds.
Karam won a 10-0 major decision over Kalvin Hayes of Atlantic in the opening round before falling to top-seeded Landen Davis of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in the second round.
Tenth-ranked Jordan Schmidt (26-14) dropped his second-round match to fourth-ranked Ben Walsh of Sergeant Bluff-Luton at 144 pounds.
Senior Jackson Feuerbach lost his opening-round match at 175 pounds 3-1 to Austin Boege of Nevada.
