CORALVILLE – The opening session of the state wrestling tournament couldn’t have gotten off to a worse start of City High.

All four City High qualifiers were pinned in their opening-round match at the Class 2A state tournament on Thursday morning at Xtream Arena in Coralville.

City High 155-pound junior Shaona Emmanuel made sure Thursday’s opening session had a better finish than start.

Emmanuel posted back-to-back consolation bracket pins on Thursday to keep her season alive and advance to the second day of the 2A tournament on Friday.

“After a start like that you let them have a little bit of space but we got right back into the next match and taking it one match at a time and getting the next best thing,” City High co-head coach Ryan Ahlers said. “For Shaona the next best thing was trying to get into the consolation semifinals and get into the third-place match.”

Fourth-ranked Emmanuel (34-6) was pinned in her opening round match by Burlington freshman Amaziah Twillie in :36.

Emmanuel had pinned Twillie in 25 seconds in the regional title match last Friday.

“I think she was a little caught off guard in the first match and didn’t stay in good position finishing a shot and got caught,” Ahlers said. “She came back and responded really well.”

Emmanuel responded from the early loss with a performance that has been more typical of the junior this season.

She pinned Bella Bruins of Raccoon River-Northwest in 55 seconds in the first-round consolation match and added a first-period pin of Spencer’s Bailey Schuster in her second round consolation match.

“In the first match I was too nervous so I wasn’t really thinking straight,” Emmanuel said. “I didn’t do my normal set ups and I didn’t wrestle my normal match but after that I was able to wrestle my normal match.”

Emmanuel will face ninth-ranked Abigail Chyma (35-13) of South Tama in a third-round consolation match on Friday in a session that begins at 10 a.m.

“I knew if I lost another match today it was it for me,” Emmanuel said. “I told myself I really can win this match and I did everything my coaches told me to do and now I need to keep doing that.”

City High junior Molly Carlson (30-10) went 1-2 at 170-pounds in her third state tournament appearance on Thursday.

Carlson was pinned by No. 11 Isabella Taylor of Anamosa in the opening round before posting a second-period pin of Kasandra Barroso of Denison-Schleswig in the consolation opening round.

Ava Pfab of Western Dubuque pinned Carlson in 2:14 in the consolation second round.

City High freshman Amelia Terrill (15-23) lost twice at 110 pounds on Thursday and freshman Izzy Brown (15-11) dropped two matches at 145 pounds.

“For three of our four it was the first time they have ever stepped out here at the state meet and it’s different,” City High co-head coach Jeff Koenig said. “Even though its six minutes, even though it’s the same size mats and they’ve wrestled here at Donnybrook it’s different. I think everyone wrestled a better second match.”
