SOLON – Any wrestler will agree that the success that comes in the spotlight of meet days starts in the shadows of the practice room.
The Solon tandem of Lucas Feuerbach and Grant Wilson aren’t just echoing that statement they are proving it every week.
“We’ll joke all the time when we say ‘iron sharpens iron’ but we dead serious mean it,” Wilson said. “I’m so grateful to have a partner like him. I wouldn’t be where I am without him to be honest.”
Feuerbach and Wilson battle daily in the practice room.
The Spartans two upper weight leaders tangle as often as the coaching staff will allow in the practice room.
“We get after it,” Feuerbach said. “We get into a fight in practice probably every other day.”
That daily work together in the wrestling room has helped Feuerbach and Wilson put together the best seasons of their careers to date.
Both won individual titles on Saturday at the Ed Hadenfeldt Invitational on Saturday helping Solon to a fourth-place team finish at its home meet.
Sixth-ranked Feuerbach (29-3) won the 215-pound title while Wilson (27-5) won the heavyweight crown as the host Spartans rolled up 195 points.
“In the room we get real mad at each other in practice but after practice we are best friends and that’s just the competitiveness that we’ve built with each other,” Wilson said. “We want to be better every day.
Feuerbach dominated his way to the 215-pound title with three first period pins, all under a minute, and a 15-0 tech fall over previously unbeaten Jace Tippet of North Scott in the final.
The sophomore standout needed just 2:12 to earn the tech fall over Tippet.
A state qualifier a year ago, Feuerbach credits his sophomore season success to the daily work with Wilson.
“We grew up today, we’ve been wrestling for a long time and he’s been a huge part of where I am today,” Feuerbach said. “He pushes me to get better. He makes me stronger, he’s a pretty tough dude, football or wrestling he’s a strong guy so to go up against him it makes me better.”
After Feuerbach’s title at 215 Wilson put the finishing touches on a strong day for Solon with a win in the 285-pound title.
Wilson had a quarterfinal pin and posted back-to-back major decisions in the semifinal and final including an 8-0 win over Tate Debuhr of Dike-New Hartford in the final.
“It does mean a lot to win this, it got cancelled last year and my sophomore year I got fourth,” Wilson said. “My dad said to me before the finals he showed me the program and said if you win this match you’ll be in this book with Tyler Linderbaum and that gives you some motivation.”
Feuerbach and Wilson highlighted four top-three finishers for the Spartans.
Senior Jordan Schmidt (15-7) was runner-up at 144 pounds and Charlie Karam was third at 138 pounds.
Clear Creek Amana had two champions and three runner-up finishers on its way to winning the team title with 240.5 points.
Nolan Howell (30-7) won the 144-pound crown with an 11-4 decision over Schmidt in the title match and Cale Nash (25-4) dominated on his way to the 132-pound title.
Nash had two pins and two tech falls on his way to the title including a 16-0 win over Logan Christoffel of West Branch in the title match.
Freshman Cole Kasparek (31-7) was runner-up at 106 pounds, Jose Mendiata (21-18) was runner-up at 113 and Trace Robertson (22-14) was runner-up at 150 pounds.
Malachi Clement (24-16) finished third at 126 pounds for the Clippers.
West Branch finished sixth with 120.5 points behind titles from Cooper Gates and Tate Frantz.
Gates (21-3) won the title at 165 pounds with a 6-3 decision over Ryker Dengler of West Liberty and Frantz (23-7) won title at 190 with a 6-3 decision over Josh Read of Iowa Valley.
Christoffel was runner-up at 132 and Cash Hatfield (10-2) was third at 144.
Liberty High junior Landon Bell (12-1) won the 175-pound title.
Bell (12-1) posted a 13-2 major decision over No. 12 ranked Logan Bruxvoort of Pella in the 175-pound title match.
Freshman Rex Edmonds (22-5) was third at 132 pounds for the Lightning.
“I had a tough loss on Thursday so the message today from coach Fred (Lima) was get back in the saddle and get back on top,” Bell said. “Every match that’s what I was thinking, just get back on top, I didn’t care who it was I just had to go try to score points.”
