SOLON – Last week Solon walked away from a 42-33 dual win over Williamsburg happy to have a victory but not thrilled with how it felt.
“Last week we won a dual at Williamsburg but felt like we didn’t wrestle well,” Solon coach Jacob Munson said. “We got a good result but didn’t wrestle very well.”
On Thursday the Spartans picked up a pair of wins and this time the Spartans couldn’t have been happier with how they performed.
Solon had four pins in a 60-21 win over Mid-Prairie and had two more wins by fall in a 54-27 victory over West High in a double dual in Solon.
“This week we really got back to basics and we’ve really pushed it this year harder than we ever have in the past and I was really impressed with our gas tanks tonight,” Munson said. “The hard work that we put in this week of going back to the basics and getting back to our fundamentals really paid off and it was fun to celebrate a good team score along with wrestling well.”
Despite the in last week Solon left Williamsburg knowing something was missing.
That missing element was energy and the Spartans had it on Thursday.
“Last week the energy just wasn’t there, we were all tired we didn’t really show up and tonight we were at home, we had our families here and we were excited,” Solon junior Adlie Miller said. “We had practiced for this for so long and we had a lot to prove tonight after Williamsburg.”
Miller was one of four Spartans to go 2-0 on Thursday posting a pair of first-period pins at 190 pounds.
Miller pinned Emma Creed of Mid-Prairie in 1:06 in the opening dual of the night for the Spartans and needed just 58 seconds to pin Aya Adam of West High in the second dual.
“It was just our energy tonight,” Miller said. “I feel like we show up and show out for each other so much and we definitely feed off of each other’s matches.”
Seniors Kara VeDepo, Makyla Keller and Olivia Bonnema all went 2-0 with a pin on Thursday as Solon improved to 5-0 on the season in dual meets.
VeDepo went 2-0 with a pin at 105 pounds while Keller won by fall at 135 pounds and Bonnema had a pin at 145 in the win over Mid-Prairie.
“This whole week we have been preaching going back to the basics and hitting what we know really hard and wrestling our style,” Bonnema said. “We weren’t focusing on wins and losses but making sure that when we got off the mat we were proud of what we did. There were some great wins at Williamsburg but what I saw tonight makes me so proud.”
Solon got rolling early against Mid-Prairie with Keller, Lucianna Miller and Bonnema posting consecutive pins at 135, 140 and 145 pounds.
Miller capped the Solon pins with a first-period fall at 190.
“You definitely need a tone setter at the beginning to start it,” Miller said. “We improved so much in so many different areas tonight I am just so proud of everyone.”
Against West High Vedepo had a first-period pin at 105 and Miller a first-period fall while the Solon added seven wins via forfeit.
“It was a really good job all around because everyone did their job the best that they could,” Bonnema said. “The difference had to be the energy and just going back to the basics and just making sure that we do what we can do and what we do very well.”
