SOLON – The format of Thursday’s double dual didn’t leave Solon much time to regroup for its final contest of the night.
After opening with a 42-24 loss to Class 2A fourth-ranked Independence the message from head coach Aaron Hadenfeldt before the final was simple – fight.
Behind the example seat by junior 132-pounder Justin Moore the Spartans fought back to finish the night 1-1 with a 64-6 win over Center Point-Urbana.
Moore overcame an early seven-point deficit with a second-period pin as Solon racked up six pins in its win over Center Point-Urbana.
“We talked about fighting before that dual started and what a perfect example Just Moore gave our team about fighting,” Hadenfeldt said. “That was fun.”
In its opening dual of the night Solon lost seven of the final eight matches, six by tech fall or fall, in a loss to Independence.
In the brief time between duals the Spartans had a change in mindset.
“I think motivation-wise we kind of came into it with the attitude of ‘we are not going to let that happen again’,” Moore said. “We had guys say ‘we got beat last time but they aren’t going to get away with it this time’.”
Solon got rolling early with four consecutive pins by Jackson Feuerbach at 175, Kyler Jensen at 190, Lucas Feuerbach at 215 and Grant Wilson at 285.
Freshman Anderson Osgood rallied for an 8-5 win over No. 12 Jackson McGonegle at 106 pounds to give Solon a 27-0 lead.
“We talked about flushing it in between duals but we need to not worry about who the guy across the mat is,” Hadenfeldt said. “It doesn’t who is across that line the fight has to be the same, the effort has to be the same.”
The match of the night came from Moore.
He fell into a deficit almost immediately against Center Point-Urbana’s Jordan Wedo but kept working his way back.
“When I was down, I was never out,” Moore said. “It came down to effort. Just the effort and training that we do transferring over. Putting in the effort was really the difference in that match.”
With less than 30 seconds remaining in the second period Moore flipped Wedo onto his back near the edge of the mat and secure the pin with five seconds remaining in the period.
“Justin Moore is the energizer bunny on our team,” Hadenfeldt said. “If I ask him to go run through that brick wall he’s going to try. You could see the kid starting to get tired and all that does is fuel Justin.”
Solon got wins from Carson Kidwell and Jadyn Bevans to close out the dual.
Kidwell went 2-0 with a pin at 157 pounds on Thursday joining Osgood, Jackson and Lucas Feuerbach and Wilson as Spartans that finished 2-0.
“Solon can be a pretty dang tough wrestling team especially if we can get back to full strength,” Hadenfeldt said. “That’s every team in the state right now but I am hopeful that our WAMAC conference schedule is going to prepare us for the postseason. I’m not happy with the first dual but the effort was there and that’s what we want from our kids.”
