Playing both offense and defense throughout an impressive senior season Liberty High senior Sutton Koller earned the tag of simply being a ‘football player’.
On Tuesday one of the state’s best players settled on where he would continue his football career.
Koller announced his commitment to Northern Iowa on Tuesday with a post on social media.
“I’m incredibly excited to announce my commitment to the University of Northern Iowa to further my academic and football career,” Koller wrote on X. “I appreciate every teammate and coach who has been a part of the journey with me….”
After standing out on the offensive side of the ball as a junior in 2023 Koller established himself as one of the best overall two-way players in the state this season.
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Koller accounted for 1,388 yards from scrimmage and 18 touchdowns on offense and also led Liberty High in tackles while helping the Lightning to the best season in program history.
As a running back Koller rushed for 544 yards and eight touchdowns and also caught 38 passes for 844 yards and 10 touchdowns this fall.
On defense Koller had a team-high 76.5 tackles including 48 solo stops and 9.5 tackles for loss from his safety spot.
Koller also had two interceptions and returned one for a touchdown helping Liberty High to a 10-2 record and the program’s first ever appearance in the Class 5A state semifinals.
Koller earned all-conference and all-district honors and was a first-team Class 5A all-state selection by the Iowa Football Coaches Association.
Over the past two seasons Koller accounted for 2,534 yards from scrimmage and 33 touchdowns.
Northern Iowa was 3-9 this season.
