FORT DODGE – On a day when Pella added another chapter to its dynasty in historic fashion Solon continued to prove it was among the best and most consistent cross country programs in the state.
In its seventh consecutive state meet appearance Solon posted its fourth top-five finish placing fourth at the Class 3A state meet on a sunny morning at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge.
Behind a record-breaking performance by junior Marissa Ferebee, Pella won its third consecutive 3A team title finishing with a state record 23 points.
Solon finished fourth with 190 points.
Sioux Center was runner-up with 142 points and Mount Vernon-Lisbon was third with 145 points.
“It was a great day,” Solon coach Emy Williams said. “They were a little disappointed they wanted to be in the top three but we went out and ran the best we could today and I am super proud of them.”
Top-ranked Pella had the top three finishers and had five runners in the top 14 while posting the lowest state meet score in history.
Ferebee won the title in an all-time Iowa best time of 16:30.9 while teammates Elsie Brenneman and Ruth Dunham finished second and third as the Pella won its third consecutive 3A crown.
Solon, the last team to win a 3A title other than Pella, finished three points in front of Winterset who was fifth.
“It’s just amazing what Pella did and I think we say if they can do that then why not us, I think that’s the kind of mentality that we have,” Williams said. “Pella is an amazing team and they have something very special going on.”
Solon was led by senior Sydney Dee who finished 20th overall in 19:24.9.
A three-time state qualifier, it was the second consecutive top-20 finish for Dee who was 18th at the state meet last season.
“I think we competed the best we could,” Dee said. “I ran how I wanted to. I found a pack to move up with and that helped me out during the race.”
Finishing behind Dee were the future of the Solon program.
Freshmen Kinley Mai, Addison Seamans and Liv Nelson placed 50th, 54th and 68th overall.
“Once you get here and kids see this, and we now have six kids that are returning that have run here and now all those kids want to get back here,” Williams said. “After time it becomes second nature and I think that is super helpful.”
Senior Ella Sheeley finished 87th overall in 20:58.8 and sophomores Falyn Svalstad and Ava Rolwes placed 95th and 114th overall.
“We are super blessed with a great senior class this year,” Williams said. “We have Sydney and Ella who ran today but then we also have some people that you don’t see out here running but they have been great supporters and leaders.”
Clear Creek Amana senior individual qualifiers Kira Barker and Sara Kinzenbaw finished 85th and 91st overall respectively.
Led by senior Brock Hilsman Clear Creek Amana finished 14th with 273 points in the Class 3A boys race.
Gilbert won the Class 3A boys title with 33 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Des Moines Christian by 45 points.
Pella was third with 92 points.
Western Dubuque junior Quentin Nauman won the individual title with the second fastest time in state meet history at 14:59.6.
Hilsman led Clear Creek Amana placing 32nd overall in a time of 16:47.6 in his third appearance at the state meet.
Freshman Carson Meskimen was 37th in a time of 16:55.6 for the Clippers while Isaac Sorensen finished 84th overall in a time of 17:33.3
Solon freshman Anders Holmes placed 49th in a time of 17:07 in his state meet debut.
