Team title race: Pella is a heavy favorite to claim a third straight title behind individual favorite Marissa Ferebee.
The Dutch won the title by 49 points a year ago and that margin could grow this season with Pella featuring three of the top five ranked runners in Ferebee, sophomores Ruth Dunham and Elise Brenneman who finished 30th and 53rd respectively last season.
Solon and last year’s runner-up Mount Vernon-Lisbon will be among the teams battling for the final two spots on the balcony.
Mount Vernon-Lisbon finished 23 points in front of Solon while winning the WAMAC Conference title earlier this month.
Both Mount Vernon-Lisbon and Solon won state qualifying meet titles last week.
Sioux Center was fourth a year ago and should be right back in the mix this season along with Glenwood and Marion.
Individual title tracker: Ferebee is in a league of her own in Class 3A and perhaps in the entire state and is expected to cruise to a second consecutive 3A title.
Harlan senior Lindsey Sonderman has finished one spot behind Ferebee each of the past two seasons.
In 2022 Ferebee finished fifth, 20 seconds in front of sixth-place Sonderman.
Last season Ferebee’s winning time was more than three seconds faster than runner-up Sonderman.
All of the top six finishers from last season return in 2024 making the list of runners battling for top 15 spots exciting.
Solon senior Sydney Dee was 18th a year ago and should be in the mix for a top-15 finish on Friday.
Area breakdown: Solon is making its seventh consecutive state meet appearance and is seeking a third top-three finish during that span.
The Spartans have impressively reloaded this season with a trio of freshman filling out a lineup that features four returning runners from last year’s team that placed eighth in 3A.
Dee leads the way for Solon along with fellow senior Ella Sheeley and sophomores Ava Rolwes and Falyn Svalstad.
Freshman Liv Nelson, Addison Seamans and Kinley Mai will all make their state meet debuts on Friday.
Clear Creek Amana has a pair of state meet veterans seeking strong finishes in seniors Kira Barker and Sara Kinzenbaw.
Barker was 68th and Kinzenbaw was 94th at the state meet a year ago and both will look to improve on those finishes on Friday.
