Week 7 Rewind: Record Breaking Season for Area Quarterbacks Continues

A record-breaking fall for Iowa City quarterbacks continued on Friday.
City High senior Bobby Bacon became the Little Hawks’ career passing leader in a 56-27 win over Davenport North on Friday.
Bacon passed for 166 yards in Friday’s win which pushed his career total to 3,710 yards in just 15 career starts.
It was the latest record set by an Iowa City quarterback this season.
West High senior four-year starter Jack Wallace became the program’s leading passer last month and set a single-game record with six touchdown passes in win over Cedar Rapids Jefferson earlier this month.
Just how good as the quarterback play been in Iowa City this season?
All three starters from the Class 5A Iowa City teams rank in the top 10 in the four major statistical categories for quarterbacks.
Bacon, Wallace and Liberty High junior Reece Rettig all are in the top 10 in 5A in passing yards, passing touchdowns, completion percentage and passer rating.
Wallace ranks first in 5A in yards (1,931), first in passing touchdowns (24), fifth in completion percentage (69.5) and first in passer rating (211.8).
In a win over Cedar Rapids Washington on Friday Wallace averaged an incredible 35.2 yards per completion, going 10-of-16 for 352 yards and three touchdowns.
Bacon was 11-of-23 for 166 yards and a touchdown in the win over Davenport North on Friday.
On the season Bacon ranks ninth in 5A in passing touchdowns (13), seventh in yards (1,430), fourth in completion percentage (70), ninth in passer rating (172).
In his first season leading the Liberty High offense Rettig has been among the most efficient quarterbacks in Class 5A.
Retting continued his stellar debut season on Friday going 15-of-18 for 234 yards and a touchdown and also rushing for 26 yards and a touchdown in a 28-20 win over Ankeny.
On the season Rettig ranks fourth in yards (1,604), fourth in touchdowns (17), second in completion percentage (73.6), second in passer rating (199.9).
News and Notes
Unbeatens: With two weeks remaining in the regular season the list of undefeated teams in the state is down to 23.
Of the 23 remaining unbeaten teams seven are in 8-player while Class 4A has four unbeaten teams and Class 2A, 1A and A all have three teams without a loss.
Bettendorf is the lone remaining unbeaten team in Class 5A.
Do it all Bolts: During its 6-1 start to the season Liberty High has had a number of players step up on both sides of the ball.
In a 28-20 win over Ankeny seniors Owen Drapeaux and Sutton Koller each stepped up on offense and on defense.
Drapeaux rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries and caught a pass for 16 yards on offense and had five tackles including a tackle for loss on defense and also punted twice averaging 35 yards per punt.
Sutton Koller caught six passes for 140 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 30 yards on offense and had a team-high 10 tackles with eight solo stops and a tackle for loss on defense.
1,000-yard Watch: With two regular season games remaining a pair of area players are closing in on 1,000 rushing yards.
Solon senior tailback Eddie Johnson has rushed for 854 yards through six games needing just 146 yards to reach 1,000 for the season.
Clear Creek Amana quarterback Conlan Poynton is closing in on 1,000 yards having rushed for 721 yards through six week.
Players of the Week
Offensive player of the week: City High senior Gabe Egeland was the latest Little Hawk running back to produce an incredible performance in Friday’s win over Davenport North.
Egeland rushed for a career-high 274 yards and five touchdowns on 32 carries helping the Little Hawks to a 56-27 win.
Egeland also caught two passes for 22 yards in the best performance of his career.
Defensive player of the week: City High freshman linebacker continued his standout debut season with a big game in a win over Davenport North.
Sheldon had a team-high eight tackles including five solo stops with three tackles for loss and two sacks in a 56-27 win over the Wildcats.
Special teams player of the week: West High junior Henry Elser made big plays in the return game in a 56-21 win over Cedar Rapids Washington.
Elser had an 82 yard kick off return that set up a touchdown and averaged 21.5 yards on a pair of punt returns.

Offense: West High senior running back Butali Butali rushed for 52 yards and a touchdown and also caught two passes for 84 yards and a touchdown in a 56-21 win over Cedar Rapids Washington.
Offense: Solon senior Eddie Johnson rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries and caught a pass for seven yards in a 42-13 loss to Williamsburg.
Offense: West High junior Julian Manson caught two passes for 116 yards and a touchdown and senior Mason Woods had four receptions for 117 yards and a touchdown in a 56-21 win over
Defense: Clear Creek Amana senior defensive back Owen Rosenberg had four tackles including a tackle for loss and an interception in a 28-7 loss to North Scott.
Defense: Solon junior Tripp Johnson had a team-high 7.5 tackles including 2.5 for loss in a 42-13 loss to Williamsburg.
Defense: Regina senior Will Aitchison had a team-high 10 tackles including seven solo stops and a tackle for loss and caught three passes for 76 yards and a touchdown in a 28-15 loss to Dyersville Beckman.
Defense: West Branch senior Tate Frantz had four tackles including 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack in a 39-20 loss to Wilton.
Defense: Clear Creek Amana senior Nolan Howell had a team-high 7.5 tackles with four solos tops including half a tackle for loss.
