IOWA CITY – Long-time Regina cross country coach Chad Swope likened the cross country season to a climb.
The summit on that climb is a few weeks away in the form of the state meet in Fort Dodge.
Regina took the next step in the climb on Thursday at the River Valley Conference meet.
“The season is a big climb,” Swope said. “If you want to get to the top of the mountain each step matters and this is just the next step.”
The next step for the Regals comes next Thursday and it is a big one.
Both the Regina boys and girls finished eighth at the RVC meet on Thursday at Kickers Soccer Complex in Iowa City in a tune up for the Class 1A district meet that will be held at the same course on October 24.
“This helps you, these meets help you,” Swope said. “It can be defeating when you aren’t winning or at the top of all these races but we try to let them know that as long as we are giving our best effort we are going to get better, you are going to improve and we’ve really gotten better every step of the way.”
Regina was eighth in the boys race with 177 points.
Class 2A top-ranked Mid-Prairie won the team title with 43 points followed by 2A No. 11 Anamosa with 64 points, 2A No. 12 Tipton with 64 points and 2A No. 15 Monticello with 87 points.
Regina junior Brendan Olney led the Regals placing 36th in a time of 19:04.7 while senior Lincoln Dardis was 38th in 19:09.7 and junior Evan White was 42nd in 19:12.9.
“The first three are our leaders, we have a senior and two juniors in there and the rest are freshman and sophomores,” Swope said. “It’s been neat to see how they’ve gelled as a group.”
Sophomore Hugh Loening was 53rd in 19:55.6, freshman Colin Laubscher finished 61st in 20:18.1 and freshman Wyatt Kaeding was 69th in 20:47.4.
“Those freshman and sophomores, they have come so far,” Swope said. “They are just scratching the surface of the potential.”
Regina finished eighth in a loaded girls race.
Class 2A second-ranked Mid-Prairie won the team title with 43 points followed by 2A fifth-ranked Tipton with 64 and No. 13 Monticello with 112 points.
Class 1A No. 19 Cascade was fourth with 134 points, Maquoketa was fifth with 143 followed by Anamosa with 169, Camanche with 174 and 1A No. 20 Regina with 177.
“We like these bigger races, the fast races and we aren’t always up in the pack but you have to use those races to keep climbing and getting better,” Swope said.
Harper Erwin led Regina with a 28th place finish in a time of 22:33.1 while junior Ruby Eastman was 31st with 22:44.3.
“It’s been just prodding Harper to go a little more and getting her to race a little more because it all trickles down and they feed off each other,” Swope said. “We talk about using the other runners and that helps us.”
Freshman Etta Winders finished 40th in 23:19.7 and senior Ali Brandt was 23:29.5 while junior Ellie Johnson was 64th in a time of 24:57.2.
Regina will be seeking a return trip to state next week on its home course.
“What’s nice is we run our first meet here and then we run here today and we get to host districts,” Swope said. “It does help us to be able to run our course.”
