IOWA CITY – A program seeking a seventh consecutive state meet appearance and fifth straight top-10 finish at state Solon certainly has its sights set on the big meets next month.
In the meantime, the Spartans are focused on competing.
“This meet the word we were focused on was ‘competitive’,” Solon senior Sydney Dee said. “We talked about that a lot.”
While Solon has big goals the Spartans aren’t looking ahead, they are focused on winning and competing right now.
Class 3A No. 11 Solon posted its second meet win in as many tries this season claiming the team title at the 10-team Bob Brown Cross Country Classic on Thursday at Kickers Soccer Complex in Iowa City.
Freshman Kinley Mai finished third in a time of 20:48.59 to lead five Spartans in the top 16 as Solon won the team title with 54 points.
3A No. 12 Clear Creek Amana was runner-up with 71, followed by 2A fourth-ranked Tipton with 101 an 3A No. 17 Washington with 112.
“We knew there were going to be a lot of 3A teams here, Washington was close to getting us at Anamosa, CCA has been strong in the past, they beat us here last year,” Dee said. “This meet has been hard for us to win in the past so we really wanted to emphasize being competitive today.”
Mai led a balanced Spartan pack on Thursday finishing third while Dee was sixth in 21:05.12.
Last Saturday Dee was third and Mai fourth at the Anamosa Invitational.
“It felt really good having a meet under the belt and knowing what it’s like, today felt a lot easier,” Mai said. “I was able to go out and push myself.”
Freshman Liv Nelson was 14th in 21:55.16, sophomore Falyn Svalstad was 15th in 22:09.66 and freshman Addison Seamans finished 16th in 22:11.01 for the Spartans.
“It definitely helps having someone that you know to be able to run with,” Mai said. “On our team we always have someone to push us.”
Clear Creek Amana had three runners finish in the top 13 on its way to its runner-up finish.
Senior Kira Barker was ninth in 21:25.13 to lead the Clippers while sophomore Kadence Whitmer was 12th in 21:44.54 and senior Sara Kinzenbaw was 13th in 21:48.02.
“That front group of five does a great job, they are practicing really well, I am liking what I am seeing at workouts we just have to bring the six and seven closer to them,” Robison said. “I think we are in a good spot.”
Class 4A No. 20 Liberty finished fifth with 127 points and 1A fifth-ranked Regina was seventh with 198 points.
Senior Mimi Marquardt finished 17th in a time of 22:17.66 to lead Liberty High while senior Clara Welch was 20th in 22:22.84.
Regina was led by junior Harper Erwin who placed 22nd in 22:34.94 and junior Ruby Eastman placed 37th in a time of 23:23.37.
