SOLON – The Class 4A state golf tournament is a little less than two months away.
On Thursday Jack Rogers and his City High teammates got a little sneak peak of what they could see in October if they make a second consecutive appearance at the state golf meet.
Rogers fired a two-under par 70 to finish fifth as City High posted a 14th place team finish at the Warrior Invitational at Saddleback Ridge Golf Course in Cedar Rapids.
Defending 4A runner-up Johnston shot a 281 to win the 18-team tournament that featured six of the top nine finishers from last year’s state meet.
“Last year was a real confidence boost for me so it was good to play here today and see all these good teams,” Rogers said. “I felt pretty good about it.”
Rogers was fourth at the 4A state meet last season.
He’s picked up right where he left off this fall posting a pair of 68s already this season before shooting a 70 on Thursday.
Waukee freshman Jonathan Ward shot a seven-under 65 to win the individual title on Thursday.
Rogers was one stroke back of Andrew Johannsen and Lucas Laffoon of Johnson and West Des Moines Dowling junior Dewell Anderson who all shot 69.
“I was hitting it good I just had a couple of bad breaks,” Rogers said. “I had four bogeys and a couple of three putts but I was hitting it well so I’m not too worried about it. It was another good day.”
Rogers shot a 35 on both the front and back and finished one stroke in front of three golfers that shot a 71 as eight players shot under par.
“I really like my start to the season this year,” Rogers said. “I had a couple of 68s to start out and just had one bad round at Geneva but I think I’m a lot better than I was last year just looking at finishes so I am just going to try to keep getting better and progressing and looking forward to the season.”
The 70 from Rogers helped City High shoot 311 as a team on Thursday.
Cedar Rapids Xavier shot a 290 to finish third followed by West Des Moines Dowling with a 291, Southeast Polk with a 294.
Waukee, North Scott and Cedar Falls all shot 297 while Bettendorf, Linn-Mar and Moline all shot 301.
Senior Zach Meredith shot a 35 on the front nine and finished with a 78 for City High while freshman Will Feagler fired an 81.
Sophomore Henry Birt and senior Nick Meredith each shot 82 for the Little Hawks.
“I’m really liking where we are at team-wise,” Rogers said. “We had a pretty solid performance at the Super Meet and we’ve kind of taken a step back score-wise in our last few meets but I think we are finding our game in what are our first competitive rounds of the year. I am really liking where we are at.”
