OXFORD – There wasn’t much stress for Clear Creek Amana in an 8-1 win over Solon in the opening game of Wednesday’s doubleheader between the WAMAC rivals.
The key for the Clippers securing a sweep of the Spartans was handling the stressful moments in game two.
Class 4A No. 12 Clear Creek Amana wiggled out of a bases loaded one-out jam in the fifth inning of a one run game on it’s a way to 6-3 win over Solon in the nightcap in Oxford.
“Those situations can be super stressful,” Clear Creek Amana sophomore Brenna Williams said. “Today we didn’t let that stress get to us.”
Clear Creek Amana swung the momentum in game two escaping the bases loaded ham in the top of the fifth and getting two runs in the bottom of the inning on a two-out RBI single by Carley Nash that helped the Clippers complete the sweep.
The Clippers improved to 22-10 on the season with the sweep while Solon dropped to 13-20.
“I think that inning gave us a lot of confidence,” Williams said. “We settled down and we knew we had it.”
Clear Creek Amana cruised to a win in the opener, breaking open a 1-1 game with six runs in the fourth inning.
Reese Stockman had an RBI single in the six-run fourth inning with Schulte providing the big blow with a two-run home run, her fourth of the season.
“I am just making sure I am getting my pitch, the pitch I want,” Schulte said. “I got the one I wanted and was able to hit it hard.”
Game two was a little more stressful.
Clear Creek Amana scored three runs in the first inning and took a 4-3 lead on an RBI ground out by Addesyn Campbell in the fourth inning.
Solon had its chance in the fifth, loading the bases with on back-to-back walks to Emerson Miller and Kendall Jensen and a single by Laeni Hinkle.
Schulte replaced junior McKenna Kelley in the circle and escaped the jam unscathed.
“I just had to make sure I kept my composure and I was spinning the ball like I need to,” Schulte said. “My team is always behind me and in the dugout cheering for me and that’s always helpful.”
Schulte got Solon eighth-grader Livya Nelson to hit a ground ball to third and Williams got the out at home.
The Clippers were the benefactor of a fortuitous bounce for the third out as catcher Sadie Hebl corralled a Schulte wild pitch that caromed off the backstop and flipped to Schulte at home in time to get the runner trying to score from third.
“We’ve had a lot of confidence in (Schulte) all season,” Clear Creek Amana coach Jodie Scheetz said. “Having her come in and finish that inning builds that confidence level even more.”
Clear Creek Amana all but put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Elizabeth Timmerman had a single and after Campbell reached on an error Nash pinch hit and plated both with a two-run, line drive single to center field.
Schulte took care of the rest as she allowed just one hit in 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief while striking out three.
Clear Creek Amana used three pitchers in both games with Timmerman allowing two runs on two hits in the nightcap and Kelley giving up one run on one hit in 2 1/3.
“Our kids are buying into what we are doing and they are all doing a great job with it,” Scheetz said of the pitchers. “We want to get through the lineup and lets get somebody new in.”
