City High Senior Menzel Named MVC Divisional Player of the Year

Following a strong season that included a 13-4 record and a spot in a Class 4A substate final City High swept the individual awards in the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division.
Seniors Maclayne Menzel and Claire Smothers were named athlete of the year and keeper of the year on Monday when the league released its postseason awards.
City High and West High each had seven players named to the Valley Division teams while Liberty High had eight players earn all-Mississippi Division honors.
Menzel headlined the postseason honorees earning player of the year honors after scoring a career-high 21 goals to lead the Little Hawks.
A four-year starter, Menzel added a career-high nine assists for City High this season.
Smothers earned keeper of the year honors after making 90 saves while allowing just 16 goals and posting nine shutouts in 17 matches.
Seniors Ava Bell and Aoife Boulter joined Menzel on the Valley Division first team.
Bell had 12 goals and 11 assists this season while Boulter had six goals and two assists.
Seniors Kelsey Dilanni and Kaitlyn Brown each earned second-team all-Valley Division honors for City High.
Dilanni led City High with 18 assists and ranked second on the team with 13 goals while Brown had six goals for the Little Hawks.
Smothers and senior Claire Loria each earned honorable mention all-Valley Division honors for Seniors Serene Hamzeh and Alyson Skala and junior Emma Potthoff were all named to the Valley Division first team for West High.
Potthoff led West High with 10 goals and added three assists while Hamzeh had a team-high 10 assists and scored five goals.
Skala scored a goal and helped West High to a 11-5 record and a spot in a Class 4A substate title game.
Seniors Maya Mozena and Ava Garcia were both second-team selections for the Trojans.
Mozena had four goals and two assists and Garcia ranked second on the team with eight goals and had four assists.
Junior Paz Martinez and sophomore keeper Lauryn Hynek each earned honorable mention honors for West High.
Liberty High had eight players earn all-division honors following the best season in program history that included a 13-5 record, the first MVC title and first state tournament appearance in program history.
Senior Bella Tafolla, junior Rilyn Breinholt and sophomore Callie Stanley were all named to the Mississippi Division first team.
Breinholt led the Lightning with 20 goals and added six assists while Tafolla had seven goals and a team-high 12 assists.
Stanley had seven goals and five assists on her way to earning first-team all-divisional honors.
Senior defender Eno Ituk, junior Alessandra Carvalhaes and sophomore keeper Ava Tague were all second-team selections.
Ituk had two goals and two assists and Carvalhaes had four goals and two assists.
Tague made 72 saves while allowing just 11 goals and posting 11 shutouts in 18 matches.
Freshman Allie Hunter and Morgan Bennett each were named Mississippi Division honorable mention picks.
