Liberty High senior Isabella Pettersen put herself in position to win a state title on Thursday.

Pettersen will try to finish the job on Friday.

Pettersen fired a one-under-par 70 in the opening round of the Class 4A state golf tournament on Thursday at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny and will enter day two of the scheduled 36-hole event in a tie for first place.

Linn-Mar senior Morgan Rupp closed shot a 33 on the back nine, which was her first nine holes, on her way to an opening-round 70 and shares the 18-hole lead with Pettersen.

Pettersen was a model of consistency in her opening round, finishing with a pair of birdies and just one bogey on her way to shooting 70.

Saleah Vivanh Vong of Des Moines East/North is one shot back of the lead after an even-par 71 in the opening round.

Izzy Steele of Pleasant Valley and Natalie Henson of Marshalltown each shot 73 on Thursday and are three strokes back of the leaders.

The second round is set to get underway on Friday at 8:30 a.m.
