DES MOINES – The objective for Solon coach Mark Sovers is to have the most complete and complimentary track team at every meet.
For the Spartans the state track and field meet is no exception.
It was a total team effort that lifted the Spartans to their best state meet finish in nearly a decade.
Solon scored in three events on Saturday and finished fifth in the Class 3A team standings with 38 points, the highest finish for the Spartans since they won the 3A title in 2014.
“It’s all about the team with us,” Solon senior Mike Yeomans said. “That’s what we talk about is doing everything for the team.”
Yeomans and fellow senior Brick Kabela both posted top-six individual finishes on Saturday and Yeomans anchored the Solon 4×400 relay team to a sixth-place finish as the Spartans equaled their highest point total at state since 2015.
The strong state meet showing was a fitting sendoff for a strong group of Spartan seniors that included Yeomans, Kabela and Ben Kampman who all left Drake Stadium in Des Moines on Saturday with multiple medals.
Yeomans finished fourth in the 800 on Saturday in a career-best time of 1:55.84.
“It was great,” Yeomans said. “I was hoping to pr and I was able to do that so it’s exciting.”
Western Dubuque sophomore Quentin Nauman won the 800 in 1:51.6 followed by South Tama senior Tommy Tyynismaa.
Yeomans was fourth followed by Clear Creek Amana junior Isaac Sorensen in fifth as three of the top five finishers were from the WAMAC Conference.
“My mindset was to stay a little behind the top pack and just keep working up the second lap,” Yeoman said. “I know a lot of those guys from conference. We talk to each other and we see each other a lot.”
Yeomans anchored the Solon 4×400 team to a sixth-place finish in 3:22.63.
It was a season-best time for the foursome of Rhett Mesch, Grant Knipper, Grant Bumsted and Yeomans.
Kabela capped his own stellar career with his second medal of the weekend finishing sixth in the 1,600 in a career-best time of 4:20.87.
Nauman claimed his fourth title of the weekend in the 1,600, winning in 4:12.8 as the top six finishers all ran under 4:21.
