DES MOINES – For all the success of the Solon girls track and field program the Spartans had never had an individual champion in the 100 hurdles.
Aly Stahle changed that in her first attempt.
Stahle became the fifth individual running event champ in program history and the first Spartan to win the 100 hurdle title when she claimed the 3A title in a time of 15.35 on Saturday at the state track and field meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
“This is amazing,” Stahle said. “I would have never thought this.”
The state title for Stahle came in her first season as a full-time hurdler and her first ever state meet appearance in the high hurdles.
A 12-event state qualifier over the past three seasons Stahle earned seven medals while helping the Spartans to back-to-back state titles in 2022 and 2023.
In her first time competing in the 100 hurdles at the state meet Stahle was perfect, posting the fastest time from prelims on Friday at 15.47 before winning the title on Saturday in 15.35.
Avery Schmitz of West Delaware was runner-up in 15.44 followed by Atlantic sophomore Jayci Reed in 15.67.
“It was just believing in myself that I could do it and my teammates supporting me,” Stahle said. “My teammates pushing me every day in practice I feel like that made a big difference.”
Stahle was an individual qualifier in the 200 each of the past two seasons while also running on six Spartan relay teams that claimed state medals.
This season Stahle transitioned to the hurdles as her individual event and reaped the rewards on Saturday.
“Last year I was in the open 200 and I was pretty confident in that,” Stahle said. “In this one I had no idea what I was going against and who I was going to be running against.”
Stahle’s title didn’t just come in her first time competing in the event it followed a challenging start to the season in which she worked her way back from a stress fracture from the fall.
All of that made Saturday’s title unexpected and a little bit sweeter for Stahle.
“I just wasn’t expecting to be in this place that I am today,” Stahle said. “At the beginning of the season I had an injury that I was dealing with, throughout all of volleyball season basically. I just never thought I could do this.”
Stahle’s strong Saturday also included a pair of relay medals.
She anchored the Solon shuttle hurdle relay team to a fifth-place finish and was part of the Spartan 4×100 relay team that finished eighth.
Stahle teamed with Mia Stahle, Zoey Grimm and Trea Eidahl to place fifth in the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:08.06.
“I still think of it as a team aspect because I’ve never really practice hurdles by myself,” Stahle said. “It’s always been with my shuttle team and racing them and pushing them in practice and making sure we are doing our best every day.”
Solon scored points in all four relays on Saturday on a strong close to the weekend that pushed the Spartans to 10th in the 3A teams standings with 27 points.
Stahle teamed with Mia Stahle, Piper Stahle and Mia Duckett to place eighth in the 4×100 in 49.99.
The Solon sprint medley relay team of Piper Stahle, Avery Kellen, Duckett and Kobi Lietz finished fourth in 1:49.5.
Solon’s foursome of Jerzey Haluska, Anna Quillin, Grace Hoeper and Kobi Lietz finished eighth in the 4×400 in a time of 4:03.07.
