DES MOINES – Clear Creek Amana sophomore Aren Schlemme came to the state track and field meet this week relatively unheralded in the Class 3A track and field world.
That will not be the case for long.
Schlemme claimed his first career state title on Friday winning the Class 3A long jump with a leap of 22-2 ½ on a busy day for the Clipper standout at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
“I still have a couple more years and hopefully I can do it again,” Schlemme said. “I’m hoping to continue this.”
A four-event qualifier that also advanced to the finals of the 110 hurdles and 4×100 relay on Friday Schlemme claimed his first career state title in clutch fashion.
Schlemme and Decorah senior Kaiden Quandahl each had a top jump of 22-2 entering their sixth and final attempt.
Quandahl passed Schlemme for the tiebreaker on his fifth jump meaning Schlemme needed to better 22-2 on his final attempt.
“I was staring at the results before my last jump,” Schlemme said. “I was look at it the whole time and I knew he had a 22-2 so I was trying to get that the whole time.”
He did that by half an inch.
“My coach told me to think the board was a trampoline,” Schlemme said. “I was just trying to jump as high as I could and I kept going.”
A scratch by Quandahl on his final attempt secured the win for Schlemme who became the first field event champion in program history.
Defending champion Josiah Cunnings of Charles City was third at 21-10 ¾.
The title for Schlemme was the first individual champion for Clear Creek Amana since Jared Ganschow won two in 2013.
“I was nervous,” Schlemme said. “I just wanted the hat. I know we get hats and I don’t wear hats but I wanted that hat.”
The title for Schlemme continued a strong weekend for Clear Creek Amana which moved up to fifth in the 3A team standings with 22 points.
The Clear Creek Amana distance medley relay team of Brayden Frank, Owen Rosenberg, Cale Berry and Isaac Sorensen finished fifth in 3:33.34.
