West High Gets Off to Solid Start on Opening Day of Class 4A State Track and Field Meet

DES MOINES – West High is hoping for a special ending to the 2024 State Track and Field Meet.
The Trojans took the first step toward a sensational finish with a solid start on Thursday.
West High had three athletes earn medal and accumulated six teams points on the opening day of the three-day Class 4A meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Moustafa Tiea and Aidan Jacobsen each posted top-eight finishes in the 400 and Colin Whitters was eighth in the discus for the Trojans.
Ankeny won titles in three of the five final events on Thursday and bolted to the front of the Class 4A team standings with 37 points.
West Des Moines Dowling is second with 25 and Cedar Falls and Davenport West are tied for third with 18 points.
West High sits in 11th with six points.
The Trojans only had entries in three of five of the events that held finals on Thursday and scored in two.
Tiea was fifth in the 400 in a time of 49.13 while Jacobsen was eighth in 49.79.
Ankeny’s Jackson Belding won his second straight title in the 400 in a time of 47.38.
Whitters continued a strong late-season push for the sophomore thrower earning his first career medal with an eighth-place finish with a throw of 156-1.
Zach McMillian of North Scott won the discus with a throw of 176-8.
