IOWA CITY – Coming off a top-five finish at the state meet last season West High envisions itself competing for a state title next month.
The Trojans looked the part of state championship caliber squad in its final regular season invitational on Thursday.
West High won seven events and pulled away from a strong field to win the Forwald/Coleman Relays team title at Raffensperger Track at City High.
“This meet is one of the best meets in the state and it falls on the best night and to have this great competition is just a blessing but we came in balancing that knowing in a week we have Drake and then we have conference,” West High coach TJ Craig said. “I went into this thinking lets put some things together, lets find a few things out if we can but also put us in a position that if things work out we can win.”
Moustafa Tiea won titles in the 400 and 800, Izaiah Loveless won the 100 and Aidan Jacobsen added a title in the 400 hurdles as West High snapped City High’s string of three consecutive Forwald team titles.
West High won titles in the 4×200, 4×400 and sprint medley relays while racking up 145 points to finish 22.5 points in front of runner-up West Des Moines Valley.
“We tried some guys in different spots and we wanted to see how that would work out as a team and how many points we could score,” Craig said. “We have to find where we can squeeze out a few more points and that means we have to have some guys step up.”
Host City High used a big night from senior Jeremiah Madlock to finish third with 119.5 points while Cedar Rapids Prairie was fourth with 109.
Madlock won a pair of individual titles, winning the high jump and the 200, and also finished fourth in the 400 to pace City High.
“My coaches were telling me all week I had to come out and perform,” Madlock said. “This is the biggest meet of the year so far, having a home meet, the environment was amazing so it feels good.”
City High got runner-up finishes from Tyler Rindels in the discus, AJ Wright in the 100, Miles Parlet in the long jump and Isaac Washpun in the 110 hurdles.
The Little Hawks were runner-up in the sprint medley and 4×800 relays.
“We were battling for most of the night and it was fun,” City High coach Mike Moore said. “For 16 of the events we were right there.”
It wasn’t enough to keep pace with West High.
The Trojans won three relay titles and were runner-up in another relay and got individual runner-up finishes from Kendall Woodson in the shotput and Mason Woods int eh 200.
“Going against your rivals like City and Liberty it’s a big deal for us,” West High sophomore Julian Manson said. “We were trying to put it together tonight. We were working on handoffs and the fundamentals, we already have our speed we just have to get everything else down pat.”
Manson was a member of the Trojans 4×200 team that won in 1:30.51 and was part of the winning 4×400 squad that capped the night with a win in 3:26.76.
Tiea was the star for the Trojans on Thursday.
The junior won the 400 in 50.15 and the 800 in 1:55.82.
Tiea anchored West High to wins in the sprint medley in 1:33.5 and the 4×400.
“It was really just fresh legs and a mindset,” Tiea said. “You can really run fast multiple times a day if you feel like you deserve it.”
Tiea put the finishing touches on the night with an impressive effort in the 4×400.
He took the baton in fifth place but charged to the front of the pack with a sub-50 second anchor split.
“I was 30 points in, I’d rather just go all in and if I die I die and if I can him I’ll be happy with myself,” Tiea said. “There was no wrong answer, either way it was just racing”
Liberty High got titles from Aidan Decker and Keegan Decker and also won the distance medley while placing sixth with 72 points.
Aidan Decker won the 1,600 in 4:20.35 and anchored the Lightning distance medley relay team to a win in 3:34.9.
Keegan Decker won the 3,200 in 9:28.89.
Pleasant Valley cruised to the girls team title with 166 points while Liberty High was fourth with 87, City High was sixth with 70 and West High was seventh with 66.
West High had a pair of individual champions as Helen Penning won the shot put with a toss of 37-2 and Sophia Olivo won the 100 hurdles in a time of 15.4.
Liberty High senior Cori Mac won the 3,000 in a time of 10:23.66.
