IOWA CITY – West High head coach TJ Craig could tell the potential was there for his 4×800 relay team to put together an impressive time.
All that was needed was the right set of circumstances.
Everything lined up on Saturday and the Trojans took advantage.
West High took nearly 10 seconds off its previous season-best time while winning the 4×800 relay title at the Eastern Iowa Track and Field Festival on Saturday at sun-splashed Trojan Field in Iowa City.
“We ran a good time indoors and we knew we had the capability of doing it and just hadn’t had a really good day to do it,” Craig said. “Today was the perfect day at our home meet to do it.”
The West High foursome of Sam Showers, Brice Wahe, Maxwell Bruss and Moustafa Tiea won the 4×800 title in 7:57.73 on Saturday, easily eclipsing their previous season-best time of 8:07.33.
“Everybody had a good race today,” Showers said. “We had Maxwell give us a good start and Brice had a breakout race and Moustafa closed it down.”
Showers, Wahe and Bruss were excellent in setting the stage for Tiea who anchored the Trojans to the title holding off Mediapolis which finished runner-up in 7:59.27.
“We were trying all year to hit it but we weren’t all firing at the same time,” Tiea said. “Today just happened to be that day.”
The 4×800 title was one of four titles for West High at the all-star formatted event that featured entries from 49 different schools from across the state.
Izaiah Loveless won the 100 and Aidan Jacobsen won the 400 hurdles for West High and the Trojans added a title in the 4×200 relay.
“I think we had 49 schools represented today and the environment is fun and it’s just a good day for this sport,” Craig said. “I am happy we can host it and be a part of it.”
Jacobsen was just off his career-best time in an impressive showing in the 400 hurdles.
He won in 52.52 in just his second time competing in the event this season.
“This year I took out a step between each hurdle, we changed up the step pattern because I just got too fast for it,” Jacobsen said. “That has really helped being aggressive and attacking that first half of the race.”
Loveless blazed to a title in the 100 in 10.95 and anchored the West High 4×200 relay team to a title.
The West High 4×200 foursome of Todd Rent, Mason Woods, Julian Manson and Loveless won in 1:28.1.
“We approach it like any other meet,” Loveless said. “It doesn’t matter what school it is or what class they are everyone is good competition at this meet and it shows that anyone can win any event and we have to put in the work.”
West High had three runner-up finishes as Waleed Ibrahim was second in the 100 hurdles, Harel Gameti was second in the 200 hurdles and the Trojans were second in the 4×100 relay.
City High got a big day from Isaac Washpun who won the 110 hurdles and finished runner-up in the long jump.
Washpun won the high hurdles in a time of 15.44 and was second in the long jump with a lead of 21-9.
“I hated the high hurdles last year but I feel like I’m a lot better this year after the offseason work,” Washpun said. “I worked hard on my form.”
Washpun also anchored the City High shuttle hurdle relay team to a runner-up finish in 1:01.48.
The City High 4×200 team of Jeremiah Madlock, Phillip Kaplan, AJ Wright and Miles Parlet was runner-up in 1:28.8.
Edwin Gangba won the 200 in 23.07 to lead Regina while Liberty High got third-place finishes from Aidan Decker in the 1,600 and Brayden Bell in the 200.
