IOWA CITY – Ben Kampman had a meet to forget on Tuesday.
The Solon senior scratched on every attempt in the discus on Tuesday at the Iowa Valley Invitational.
Kampman bounced back with a performance to remember at the Iowa Track and Field Festival on Saturday after at West High.
Kampman launched a career-best and school-record toss of 188-4 in the discus while sweeping the throwing events to highlight a stellar day for the Spartans at the all-star format meet that featured entries 49 different schools.
“On Tuesday I scratched all four of my throws so we worked pretty hard at practice on the fundamentals,” Kampman said. “I was excited to get back out there and I just popped one out there today.”
Kampman added a title in the shot put with a mark of 52-9 but his discus performance was the headliner.
The 188-4 effort came on the final throw of the day for Kampman and is the best in the state this spring.
It was a little extra special following the disappointment of earlier in the week.
“It does make it feel a lot better, it felt good,” Kampman said. “I just want to keep climbing and throw my best throws in May.”
The two titles from Kampman were part of a huge day for Solon as the Spartans won four events and set three school records.
Freshman Kaden Hoeper cleared a career-best 6-4 ½ to win the high jump and Solon won the shuttle hurdle relay in a school-record time of 1:00.9.
“We wanted to get the blue standard and get close the minute mark,” senior Nash Kotar said of the shuttle hurdle relay title. “It feels good to get that and a school record.”
Charlie Brandt, Cole Carney and Ben Duckett all joined Kotar as returners on the Spartan shuttle hurdle team this spring.
It didn’t take long for the foursome to make history, breaking the school record on Saturday while edging runner-up City High which finished in 1:01.48.
“At the start of the year we had a talk as a team that we could do some special things,” Kotar said. “We are all returning, it’s my fourth year and Charlie’s third year so it’s mostly that experience and we have a good group of guys.”
The Solon 4×800 team of Grant Bumsted, Brick Kabela, Spencer Michels and Michael Yeomans finished fifth in a stout field on Saturday while setting a school-record with a time of 8:09.3.
Solon also got a fourth-place finish from Marcus Richard in the shot put, a fourth-place finish from Eddie Johnson in the 200 and a fifth-place finish from Kabela in the 1,600,
Solon was fourth in the 4×200 and fifth in the 4×400.
“I don’t think we see any meet as too big or too small,” Kotar said. “We go into every meet with the same goals.”
