City High has turned to a familiar face to lead its boys basketball program.
Former City High girls basketball coach Bill McTaggart was announced as the new boys basketball coach at City High on Tuesday pending approval of the school board.
“Our search was extensive, but in the end we just needed to walk up to the second floor,” City High Athletic Director Phil Lala said in a release. “Bill is a winner, he’s a Little Hawk through and through, and he’s ready to energize this program. His experience and steady hand is what our program needs at this point in time. We’re looking forward to our basketball program taking a big step forward under his leadership.”
In 23 years leading the City High girls program McTaggart turned the Little Hawks into a perennial power.
McTaggart amassed a 427-130 record at City High leading the Little Hawks to 14 Mississippi Valley Conference championships, including eight straight from 2013-2010.
The Little Hawks reached the state tournament 12 times under McTaggart, winning a Class 4A state title in 2008.
Prior to coming to City High in 1998, McTaggart coached boys basketball in Texas posting a 91-61 record at Rio Hondo High School and San Perlita High School.
“I am very excited and looking forward to the challenge of taking over our boy’s basketball program,” McTaggart said in a release. “City High has a very special place in my heart and I’m energized to get our arena rockin’.”
McTaggart replaces Brennan Swayzer who won 34 games in five seasons leading the program.
City High was 6-16 last season.
