DES MOINES – Alexander Pierce is headed back to the state semifinals.

A state champion at 106 pounds in his state meet debut last season Pierce (34-1) advanced to the 113-pound semifinals with a 5-2 quarterfinal win over Southeast Polk freshman Mat Prine (32-10) at the 3A state tournament on Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Top-ranked Pierce scored takedowns in the first and third periods and added a second-period escape in his quarterfinal win over Prine.

Pierce will face fourth-ranked Cale Vandermark (35-5) of Ankeny Centennial in the 3A semifinals on Friday in a session that begins at 1:30 p.m.

Vandermark defeated Indianola freshman Mac Croson 2-1 in a quarterfinal on Thursday.

The 113-pound semifinal will be a rematch of the district title match last Saturday won by Pierce 4-0.

Pierce was the highlight of the second day for West High which sends three wrestlers into the third day of competition.

Fourth-ranked Junior Justin Avila (34-4) lost a 15-9 decision to fifth-ranked Logan Trenary of Southeast Polk in a 150-pound quarterfinal.

Avila will face Owen Walker (30-12) of West Des Moines Valley in a consolation match on Friday.

Seventh-ranked senior Kyler Scranton (35-6) bounced back from a second-round loss on Wednesday with back-to-back pins in the 175-pound consolation bracket on Thursday.

Scranton pinned Jack Freking of West Des Moines Dowling in 3:09 and added a pin of David Theisen of Western Dubuque in 2:45.
