DES MOINES – Following a second-round win at the state tournament on Wednesday Liberty High senior Vincenzo Lima laid out a plan for state tournament success that started with smart wrestling.

In two matches on the state’s biggest stage this season Lima has shown a flare for the dramatic.

After scoring an escape and takedown in the final seconds of his second-round win over Clear Creek Amana’s Carson Nash on Wednesday Lima used more late-match magic to advance to the Class 3A semifinals for the first time on Thursday.

Third-ranked Lima (31-2) scored a reversal with 30 seconds remaining and held on for a 5-4 win over fourth-ranked Griffin Schultz (31-4) of Linn-Mar in a 215-pound quarterfinal match at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Lima went 3-2 at the state tournament last season, coming up one win shy of a medal in the 195-pound bracket.

With his second consecutive thrilling win on Thursday Lima locked up his first state medal.

Lima will face top-ranked Fort Dodge sophomore Dreshaun Ross (45-0) in the 215-pound semifinals on Friday in a session that starts at 1:30 p.m.

The win on Thursday was the second one-point victory for Lima over Schultz in a span of three weeks.

Lima won a 9-8 decision of Schultz in the finals of the Mississippi Valley Conference tournament on January 27.

Lima used an escape and a takedown to take a 3-1 lead in the second period.

Schultz responded with an escape nine seconds into the third period and a takedown a minute later gave the Linn-Mar senior a 4-3 lead.

Lima used the late reversal to secure the win.
