DES MOINES – The first two meetings between WAMAC rivals Jordan Schmidt and Jase Jaspers were decided by a single takedown.

A single point separated the two in last week’s district title match.

The fourth and final match between Schmidt and Jaspers was the tightest yet.

Second-ranked Jaspers rode out Schmidt in the final 30-second overtime period to earn a 2-1 tiebreaker victory in a 138-pound semifinal match at the Class 2A state tournament on Friday morning at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The win sends Jaspers (39-3) back to the state title for the second year in a row and avenges a 5-4 loss to Schmidt in the district title match last Saturday in Solon.

Jaspers won each of the first two meetings with Schmidt by a score of 3-1 scoring the lone takedown of the match.

Neither wrestler could muster a takedown on Friday.

Escapes by Jaspers in the second period and Schmidt (47-7) in the third period accounted for all the scoring before overtime.

Jaspers nearly won the match in regulation but Schmidt held off a takedown attempt in a scramble that ended the final period.

After a scoreless opening overtime period Jaspers needed 11 seconds to escape in the second session to take a 2-1 lead.

Last year’s 126-pound runner-up, Jaspers then rode Schmidt for the final 30 seconds to secure the win.

Jaspers will face top-ranked Blake Fox (49-1) of Osage in the 138-pound title match on Saturday evening.

Schmidt has secured his second consecutive state medal and will attempt to improve on his seventh-place finish from last season.

Schmidt will face West Marshall junior Shane Hanford (41-2) in a consolation match on Saturday morning.
