City High Sends Three Wrestlers to Semifinals in Strong Second Session at Class 3A State Tournament

DES MOINES – After a strong finish to the opening session at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament on Wednesday City High picked up where it left off on Thursday.
City High won three of four quarterfinal matches and had another wrestler pick up a pair of wins in the consolation bracket in a second consecutive strong showing on day two of the four-day tournament at Wells Faro Arena in Des Moines.
Cael Seaton, Kael Kurtz and Kael Voinovich all secured spots in the 3A semifinals with quarterfinal wins on Thursday while senior Jake Mitchell won back-to-back consolation matches to keep his season alive.
The strong performance on Friday boosted City High to No. 13 in the Class 3A team standings with 48 points.
Top-ranked Seaton advanced to the semifinals for the fourth consecutive season with a second-period pin of fifth-ranked John King (31-11) of Waukee Northwest.
Seaton (32-1) will face fourth-ranked Connor Fiser (33-3) of Bondurant-Farrar in the 132-pound semifinals on Friday that get underway at 1:30 p.m.
Fiser defeated ninth-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Tyler Lee 5-3 in the quarterfinals.
The 126-pound champion last season, Seaton is seeking
A fourth-place finisher at Kael Kurtz 132 and 126 pounds the past two seasons Kurtz (26-3) secured a third consecutive semifinal appearance with a 6-1 win over sixth-ranked Wil Oberbroeck (27-9) of Southeast Polk in the quarterfinals.
Third-ranked Kurtz will face second-ranked Koy Davidson (40-2) of Fort Dodge in the 138-pound semifinals on Friday.
Davidson advanced with an 11-4 decision over seventh-ranked Zane Behrends of Waverly-Shell Rock on Thursday.
Joining Kurtz and Seaton in the 3A semifinals is Voinovich, a transfer from Oklahoma who is making his debut at the Iowa state tournament.
The top-ranked wrestler at 157 pounds, Voinovich (39-1) continued his dominating start to the state tournament with a 19-7 major decision over fifth-ranked Isaac Bruhl (20-2) of Ankeny Centennial.
Voinovich will face second-ranked Grant Kress (32-1) of Linn-Mar in the 157-pound semifinals on Friday. Kress advanced with a 4-1 win over eighth-ranked Nolan Riddle of Fort Madison on Thursday.
Mitchell (29-12) posted back-to-back wins in the 144-pound consolation bracket to move one win away from the first state medal of his career.
Mitchell won a 11-3 major decision over Ryker Jones of Clear Creek Amana and pinned Cayden Mayfield of Dallas Center-Grimes in 3:42.
Mitchell can secure a top-eight finish with a win over seventh-ranked Elijah Blewitt (33-12) of Indianola on Friday.
