DES MOINES – Jordan Schmidt couldn’t have picked a more opportune time to do the best wrestling of his career.

The result of the late season surge for Schmidt is a second consecutive day of reaching new heights in his wrestling career.

After reaching the quarterfinals for the first time on Wednesday Schmidt advanced to the Class 2A 138-pound semifinals for the first time with an 8-7 tiebreaker win over Kaden Kremer (40-8) of Independence on Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The win on Thursday was the second straight state-tournament victory over a ranked opponent for seventh-ranked Schmidt (47-6) who defeated eighth-ranked Cael Nelson of Carroll 4-2 in the second round on Wednesday.

Kremer took a 2-0 lead with a takedown in the opening period and Schmidt evened the match with his own takedown in the second period.

A wild third-period that featured 10 total points ended in a 7-7 tie after a late escape by Schmidt.

Schmidt scored an escape in the third overtime to secure the win and a first trip to the semifinals.

The win by Schmidt avenged a pair of regular-season losses to Kremer who won the most recent meeting between the two WAMAC rivals 4-2 in overtime in the semifinals of the WAMAC tournament last month.

With the win Schmidt set up a fourth meeting this season with second-ranked Mount Vernon sophomore Jase Jaspers (38-3) in the semifinals.

Jaspers advanced to the semifinals by winning a 5-0 decision over Ragen Hasche (33-7) of Central Lyon-George-Little Rock.

Jaspers won a pair of 3-1 decisions over Schmidt in the regular season before Schmidt won a 5-4 decision in the most recent meeting in the district title match last Saturday.

Schmidt earned the first medal of his career placing seventh last season while Jaspers was runner-up at 126 pounds a year ago.

Solon freshman Lucas Feuerbach (42-10) went 1-1 in a pair of consolation matches at 215 pounds on Thursday.

Feuerbach Stryker Lettington of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in 1:47 and was pinned by Sioux Center’s Brodie Van Regenmorter in 3:42.
