Alexander Pierce, Braden Doyle, Kyler Scranton and Justin Avila all earned return trips to the state wrestling tournament on Saturday.

Only this season that West High foursome will have company in Des Moines.

Pierce, Scranton and Avila all won district titles on Saturday as West High doubled its state qualifier total from a year ago qualifying eight wrestlers for the state meet at the Class 3A, District 8 meet at Cedar Rapids Prairie High School.

Freshmen Charles Barnhouse and Matthew Tran, sophomore Campbell Janis and senior Ashton Honore all secured spots at the state meet that opens Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines where they will join the Trojans’ four returning qualifiers.

Top-ranked Pierce (32-1) won the 113-pound title with a 4-0 win over fourth-ranked Cale Vandermark of Ankeny Centennial in the championship match.

Fourth-ranked Avila (33-3) knocked off top-ranked Lucas Bruhl of Ankeny Centennial in the 150-pound title match to earn a return trip to the state meet.

Seventh-ranked Scranton (33-5) pinned Liberty High senior Gavin Benton in 3:38 in the 175-pound championship match.

Tran and Janis secured spot at the state meet with runner-up finishes.

Janis (20-16) was runner-up at 138 pounds while Tran (27-9) was second at 120 pounds falling to fourth-ranked Cody Vandermark of Ankeny Centennial in the championship match.

Doyle (19-12) was third at 144 pounds, Barnhouse (25-13) was third at 106 and Honore (18-13) was third at 285 pounds to
