The wrestling postseason got rolling last week with regional and state dual meets.
Things pick up a notch this weekend with district meets taking place across the state in all three classes.
After going on the road to face rival Mount Vernon in a regional dual last week Solon gets the benefit of being at home on Saturday.
The Spartans will host the Class 2A, District 9 meet that features third-ranked Mount Vernon.
There are 12 districts across Class 2A with the top two finishers from each district advancing to the 2A state meet schedule for February 14-17 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Class 2A, District 9
When: Saturday, 10 a.m.
Where: Solon High School
Teams: Solon; Camanche; Central DeWitt; Columbus; Mid-Prairie; Mount Vernon; Solon; Tipton; West Liberty
Ranked teams: No. 3 Mount Vernon
What to Watch: Solon sent four wrestlers to the state meet last season and will trying to improve on that number on Saturday behind five wrestlers that enter district competition with at least 34 wins.
Junior seventh-ranked 138-pounder Jordan Schmidt (42-6) is the lone returning state qualifier for the Spartans who fell to third-ranked Mount Vernon in the finals of a regional dual last week.
Freshman 215-pounder Lucas Feuerbach (38-7) and senior 120-pound Kyler Steapp (37-12) should both be in contention for top two spots and a trip to state.
Senior 144-pounder Lawsin Sinnwell (36-15) and sophomore 106-pounder Jayden Steapp (37-12) both enter following 35 plus win regular seasons but are in brackets with multiple ranked wrestlers.
Junior Grant Wilson (24-11) at 285 and sophomores Carson Kidwell (28-22) at 150, Teague Williams (23-15) at 157 and Kyler Jensen (27-18) at 190 pounds can all push for top two spots with strong showings on Saturday.
Wrestler to Watch: Feuerbach will look to put an exclamation point on what has already been a stellar debut season with a trip to the state tournament.
The Solon freshman spent several weeks in the Class 2A rankings at 215 before dropping out this week and appears on a collision course with Central DeWitt junior Chris Wrage (36-6) who entered the 215-pound rankings at No. 11 this week.
Three of the losses this season for Feuerbach (38-7) have come to second-ranked Gavin Bridgewater of South Tama with two other losses to Carson Nash of Clear Creek Amana.
Wrage has won 10 consecutive matches since a loss to 3A fourth-ranked Griffin Schultz of Linn-Mar.
The 215-pound final will be one worth sticking around for.
Weight Class to Watch: The 138-pound title match is trending toward a third meeting in a less than a month between WAMAC rivals Schmidt and Jase Jaspers of Mount Vernon.
A single takedown has been the difference in each of the first two meetings with second-ranked Jaspers (34-2) winning both matches 3-1.
The most recent win for the Mount Vernon sophomore over Schmidt came on January 30 at the regional dual final in Mount Vernon.
A top-two finish gets you to state but the winner of this highly anticipated matchup also heads to Des Moines as a district champ and full of confidence.
