MOUNT VERNON – The biggest matches of the season wait ahead with district tournaments and the state tournament on the horizon for area wrestlers.
In Tuesday’s regional dual meet Solon got a look at the level required to win those pivotal postseason matches.
Class 2A No. 14 Solon came up short of a spot at the state dual tournament falling to second-ranked Mount Vernon 46-15 in the regional dual finals in Mount Vernon.
“You are talking about a state finals, state champs type team right there,” Solon coach Aaron Hadenfeldt said of Mount Vernon. “I thought our guys battled. We had some matches that didn’t go our way but we knew we were up against it but that’s why you wrestle.”
Solon won its opener over No. 18 Columbus 38-28 on Tuesday but couldn’t keep up with Mount Vernon which advanced to the 2A state dual tournament on Saturday at Xtream Arena in Coralville.
Solon won six consecutive matches in the win over Columbus and had three pins in the opening-round victory.
Lawsin Sinnwell had a first-period pin at 144 pounds and Jackson Feuerbach had a pin at 165 as Solon built a 29-6 lead.
“Columbus is a tough team and we knew we were going to be in a battle with them,” Hadenfeldt said. “Good duals come down to bonus points and coming out with those gritty wins and our guys did a good job of fighting and getting those.”
Solon got off to a solid start against Mount Vernon.
Evan Burg won a 4-0 decision over Drew Thurn at 126 pounds and Charlie Karam followed with a 9-4 win over Caleb Keegan at 132 to give Solon a 6-0 lead.
Mount Vernon got four consecutive wins from Jase Jaspers at 138, Jackson Jaspers at 144, Mikey Ryan at 150 and Jackson Hird at 157 to take a 19-6 lead.
Solon sophomore Teague Williams stopped the Mustang winning streak with a 4-1 decision over Cooper Hird at 165 pounds.
“Teague Williams is about as gritty as they come,” Hadenfeldt said. “You know you are going to get that kids’ best effort every time he comes out which is what you want out of your kids.”
Mount Vernon won five of the final seven matches with four pins in that stretch.
Kyler Steapp won a decision at 120 and Lucas Feuerbach had a pin at 215 for Solon.
“There are absolutely positives to take away from this,” Hadenfeldt said. “Our kids are all thinking big picture that we just got beat for a chance to go to the duals but we will remember it because this is what will be in the back of our minds all summer long.”
