Regina didn’t need to look far to find the next leader of its football program.
Regina announced the hiring of former assistant coach Dustin Elsbury as its new head football coach in a statement released on Wednesday morning.
“We are ecstatic to have coach Elsbury step into his new role of head varsity football coach,” Regina Activities Director Taylor Hotek said in a release. “His passion for Regina and dedication to our student athletes, both on and off the field, aligns perfectly with our school’s values. We believe that under Dustin’s leadership Regina football will continue its tradition of excellence.”
The hiring of Elsbury marks the second time in four seasons Regina has hired a former assistant coach to lead the program.
Elsbury replaces Jason Dumont who retired from coach at Regina last month after directing the Regals to a 23-7 record in three seasons as a head coach.
Dumont spent 14 seasons as defensive coordinator for the Regals before taking over for Marv Cook as head coach prior to the 2021 season.
Elsbury coached offensive line, defensive line and linebackers in his time as an assistant at Regina.
A Coe College graduate, Elsbury is a high school physical education at Regina.
Elsbury also serves as head strength and conditioning coach, assistant wrestling coach and assistant track and field coach at Regina.
“I am honored and excited to lead the Regina football program,” Elsbury said in a release. “Regina has a rich history of success and I am committed to building on that legacy. I look forward to working with our student athletes to develop their skills, instill a strong work ethic and foster a sense of community both on and off the field. Football is the ultimate team sport. In my life I have been blessed with an elite team of mentors to who me what it takes to be a successful leader. I cannot thank them enough.”
Regina went 9-2 and reached the Class 1A state quarterfinals last fall.
