IOWA CITY – Over the past two seasons Morgan Miller has played at a high level and put up big numbers while spearheading a fast-paced Regina attack and leading the Regals to successful seasons.
Nothing has changed this season, Miller is still doing all of those things this season, the only difference being Miller is doing everything even better in her third varsity season.
Miller is playing at an even higher level, putting up bigger numbers and directing an even faster Regina squad this season helping the Regals to a 6-1 start and a number four ranking in Class 2A.
“She is never content with what is going on on the court and you can just see it,” Regina coach Mary Rogers said of Miller. “She is always wanting to do more, be better and work at it to improve.”
Last season was a big jump for Miller who went from averaging 10 points per game as a freshman to a team-high 17 points per game last season.
During her breakthrough sophomore season Miller increased her rebounding and assist averages while shooting career bests from the floor, the 3-point line and the free throw line.
Seven games into her junior season Miller has once again been better across the board.
Miller is averaging a team-high 22.7 points per game to go with 5.3 steals, 4.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game for the fourth-ranked Regals who have won five straight and are 4-0 in River Valley Conference South Division play.
The 22.7 points per game for Miller rank 13th in the state and sixth in Class 2A.
“Every year I feel like I get more confident,” Miller said. “That is definitely true this year and as a point guard I tried to step in leadership and I think that has been important for me.”
Miller isn’t just piling up big point totals, she has scored 23 or more points five times including a 34-point outburst against Durant, she is doing everything else required to help the Regals thrive.
The 5-foot-6 Miller had 10 rebounds in a season-opening win over Maquoketa and 11 steals in a win over Wilton.
“Sometimes she goes under the radar with the big nights that she has, it’s kind of just the expectation that I know is there for here but she just does a lot,” Rogers said. “Even if its not scoring she does a lot for us.”
Miller spent the offseason focused on improving her strength in addition to her regular load of basketball.
Noticeably bigger and stronger this season, Miller has evolved as a total playmaker for a Regina team that wants to push the pace.
“She’s made a big jump,” Rogers said. “She just ties everything together for us and brings everyone in to help them do what they need to do.”
For the second straight season Miller has upped her scoring while being more efficient.
She is shooting a career-best 60 percent from the field, including 45 percent from 3-point range and 67 percent from the free throw line. All the best marks of her career.
“I’ve gotten a lot stronger and I think that has helped make me more confident,” Miller said. “I’ve been able to finish better and deepen my range with that strength.”
With Miller leading the way Regina leads Class 2A and ranks eighth in the state averaging 69.3 points per game and has already scored 73 or more points in four games this season.
The Regals are shooting 52 percent from the field as a team.
“We play fast and I love it,” senior guard Alli Clark said. “Morgan is a great passer and I love knowing that when I am running down the court she is going to find me with a great pass for an easy layup.”
