Cael O’Neill
Solon graduate and current Wartburg senior placekicker Cael O’Neill was perfect on five attempts to help Wartburg to a 31-28 win over Wisconsin-Whitewater in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III playoffs on Saturday in Waverly.
O’Neill made a career-long 42-yard field goal in the opening quarter and converted on all four of his PAT attempts as the Knights improved to 13-0 on the season and advanced to take on top-ranked North Central College in the semifinals on Saturday.
On the season O’Neill is 6-of-10 on field goal attempts and has converted on 62 of 65 PAT attempts.
Aubrey Joens
Former City High standout and current Oklahoma senior guard Aubrey Joens had a season-high 19 points and eight rebounds in a 103-69 win over Grambling in Norman, Oklahoma on Friday.
The 19-point, eight-rebound performance continued to a strong start to the season for Joens who has scored in double figures in seven of eight games while helping the Sooners to a 6-2 start to the season.
Joens is averaging 13.5 points per game on 57 percent shooting from the floor including 49 percent from beyond the 3-point arc to go with 4.8 rebounds per game.
Gabe Arnold
City High graduate and current Iowa freshman Gabe Arnold was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week last Wednesday.
Arnold defeated sixth-ranked Will Feldkamp of Iowa State 3-2 on Sunday to help Iowa to an 18-14 dual win over the Cyclones.
It was the second win over a ranked opponent for Arnold who defeated 11th-ranked Travis Wittlake of Oregon State 4-2 on November 19.
