FORT DODGE – Clear Creek Amana coach Ben Robison knows what it takes to compete for hardware at the state cross country meet.
Robison led the Clippers to consecutive runner-up finishes in 2018 and 2019.
The first step is to earn your spot at state – something the Clippers have done the past two seasons.
Next, you’ve got to climb.
That is what Clear Creek Amana continued to do one Saturday.
A year after placing 14th in its first state meet appearance since 2019 the Clippers finished ninth at the 3A state meet on a cold and overcast afternoon at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge.
“Our boys had a phenomenal day,” Robison said. “I think the last rankings we were 12th and we finished ninth. There wasn’t a single one of our boys that had a bad race. I think a couple of them that were maybe a little aggressive at the start but the pack worked really good for us today.”
Junior Brock Hillsman led Clear Creek Amana placing 30th in a time of 16:44.7.
It was the second consecutive 30th place finish for Hillsman who took more than five seconds off his state meet time from last season.
“Our boys ran well and our meet schedule helps us for races like this,” Robison said. “I know we don’t go to meets and win them all but it’s set up that the kids know what these races are like. They were able to find themselves in the second mile and that made the difference.”
Led by Hilsman the Clippers had four runners in the top 66 while finishing with 229 points.
Gilbert won the team title with 57 points followed by Pella with 63 and Council Bluffs Lewis Central with 100.
Clear Creek Amana was six points behind eighth-place Mount Vernon-Lisbon while WAMAC rival Solon was seventh with 215.
Senior Thomas Stiltner was 64th in 17:11.1, junior Isaac Sorensen finished 65th in 17:11.2 and senior Jamie Hayes was 66th in 17:11.3.
“We are in a really good spot and we have a good mix of kids returning and coming in,” Robison said. “We’ve always run better at the end of the season than we have at the beginning and as long as we can keep doing that I think it’s going to be a couple of years of sustained success.”
The Clear Creek Amana girls team also made its second consecutive state meet appearance on Saturday finishing 15th with 332 points.
Junior Kira Barker led Clear Creek Amana placing 68th in a time of 20:32.2 and junior Sara Kinzenbaw finished 94th in a time of 21:00.5.
Freshman Kadence Whitmer was right behind in a 95th place in a time of 21:01.3.
“We will have six of the seven that were here today back. We have some work to do to develop the younger kids but they are in a great spot for sustained success,” Robison said. “I know they aren’t happy with a 15th place finish but largely they should be pleased with where they are at and how that springboards into track and next fall.”
