A season opening win helped West High become a ranked team.

After defeating Liberty High 35-28 in its season opener on Friday West High (1-0) was No. 10 in Class 5A in the first Associated Press poll released on Monday.

West High was tied with Davenport West for 10th in the first 5A poll of the season while City High was among 11 teams that received votes in Class 5A.

Regina was among the team receiving votes in the Class 1A poll.

Top-ranked teams in the first AP poll of the season were West Des Moines Dowling in Class 5A, Council Bluffs Lewis Central and North Scott were tied atop Class 4A, Nevada in 3A, Van Meter in 2A, Grundy Center in 1A, West Hancock in Class A and Gladbrook-Reinbeck in 8-player.
