Clear Creek Amana was an underdog in its run to the Class 4A state title game last season pulling back-to-back upsets of the second and third seeds before finishing runner-up.

The Clippers will enter this season as the 4A favorite.

Clear Creek Amana was number one in Class 4A in the preseason rankings released on Monday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

The Clippers return seven of nine players in the rotation from a team that went 34-11 and fell to Cedar Rapids Xavier in the 4A title match last season.

Clear Creek Amana leads second-ranked Indianola, No. 3 North Scott, fourth-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier and No. 5 Norwalk in the 4A preseason top five.

The Clippers are one of three area teams to open the 2023 season ranked in the top 10 in their respective class.

Defending 5A state champion Liberty High was seventh in the preseason rankings after going 33-8 and winning the first title in program history last fall.

Waukee Northwest is top ranked in Class 5A followed by West Des Moines Dowling, Johnston, West Des Moines Valley, Cedar Falls and Ankeny Centennial.

Solon opens the season ninth in the Class 3A rankings after going 26-13 and advancing to a regional title match last season.

Other top-ranked teams in the preseason rankings are Des Moines Christian in 3A, Dike-New Hartford in 2A and Ankeny Christian in 1A.
