Third-Ranked Dubuque Wahlert Stops Solon in Regional Title Game

An impressive postseason run for Solon came up one win shy of a spot at the state tournament.
Third-ranked Dubuque Wahlert bolted to a three-run lead just two innings into the game and rolled to a 6-1 win over No. 11 Solon in the Class 3A, Region 7 title game on Tuesday in Dubuque.
The win sends Dubuque Wahlert (31-8) to the state tournament for the second straight season where the Golden Eagles will face Benton Community (28-14) in a 3A quarterfinal on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m.
Solon closed the season 24-14.
Dubuque Wahlert jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
The Golden Eagles got singles by Tierani Teslow and Sadie Schultz and a double by Anna Roling all with two outs and took advantage of a pair of Solon errors while taking an early lead.
Dubuque Wahlert tacked on a single run in the second to take a 3-0 lead.
Solon got a run back in the third when Kassidy Lietz led off with a single and scored on a two-out single by Hilary Wilson.
That was as close as Solon would get as Dubuque Wahlert responded with two runs in the fourth and added a run in the sixth on a solo home run by Ruth Tauber.
The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for Solon which was seeking its first state tournament appearance since 2016.
Julia Roth earned the win for Dubuque Wahlert allowing one unearned run on six hits while striking out four without walking a batter.
Maddyn Gates took the loss allowing five runs, two earned, on six hits while striking out three in four innings.
Lietz had two hits and scored a run for Solon while Wilson had a hit and drove in a run.
Izzy Frees doubled and Claire LaDage and Kayla Meseck each added hits for Solon.
