Regina Puts Nine, West Branch Three On RVC South Division Softball Team

Defending Class 2A state champion Regina opened its title defense with a 12-0 win over Pekin on Wednesday in a 2A regional quarterfinal.
A day later the Regals were recognized for their play during an impressive regular season that included a 24-8 record and a share of the River Valley Conference South Division title.
Regina had nine players named to the RVC South Division all-conference teams on Thursday and Angela Kessler was named South Division coach of the year when the league released its postseason honors.
The Regals had four first-team South Division selections with the senior trio of Ashley Webb, Courtney Kessler, Dani Laughlin and junior Gabby Sueppel all earning first-team honors.
Webb was a first-team pick at pitcher after posting a 13-6 record and a 1.58 ERA while striking out 137 in 101 2/3 innings.
Webb also hit .362 with five extra-base hits and 16 RBI.
Laughlin was a first-team pick as an outfielder after batting .623 with 40 runs scored, 31 stolen bases and 15 RBI.
Kessler earned first-team honors as a catcher following a senior season in which she hit .541 with 17 extra-base hits including two home runs and drove in 46 runs.
Sueppell was a first-team selection as an infielder after the junior shortstop batted .313 with 20 RBI and 17 runs scored.
Senior Jillian Panther, juniors Alli Clark and Morgan Gahan and sophomore Reese Litton were all named to the South Division second team.
Panther batted .270 with a home run and seven RBI and posted a 5-2 record and 1.47 ERA in the circle striking out 46 in 38 innings.
Litton was 5-0 in the circle with a 3.20 ERA and struck out 46 in 46 innings on her way to second team honors.
Clark batted .319 with seven doubles and a triple and drove in 1 runs and scored 18 runs.
Gahan batted .393 and had six extra-base hits, drove in 19 runs and scored 21 runs.
Junior Avery Kies was an honorable mention South Division selection for Regina.
West Branch had three players earn all-South Division honors led by sophomore Lanie Meyer who was a first-team utility pick.
Meyer led West Branch with a .448 batting average, 23 extra-base hits, 36 RBI and 26 runs scored while slugging .812 and posting a .505 on-base percentage.
Junior Alyse Klinkkammer was a second-team utility pick after posting a 5-5 record and 5.60 ERA in the circle and also batting .313 with nine doubles, nine RBI and 24 runs scored.
Freshman Addie Schultes earned South Division honorable mention honors for West Branch.
