Liberty High’s Saul, West High’s Nelson Named MVC Divisional Athletes of the Year

Liberty High and West High each concluded memorable seasons with state championship match appearances on Saturday.
Monday the accolades for outstanding seasons began to roll in for both teams.
West High senior Michael Nelson and Liberty High senior Hayden Saul were named Mississippi Valley Conference divisional athletes of the year on Monday when the conference announced its postseason honors, highlight a long list of all-division honorees for both teams.
Class 4A runner-up West High had four first-team picks among nine players named to the MVC Valley Division team and Brad Stiles was named Valley Division coach of the year.
The Class 3A state champion, Liberty High had seven players earn all-division honors led by Saul who highlighted a trio of first-team picks with his player of the year honors.
Nelson was named Valley Division athlete of the year after scoring 12 goals and adding four assists for the Trojans.
Seniors Amre Ibrahim and Nathan Heenan and junior Kaleab Wendy joined Nelson on the Valley Division first team.
Wendy had a team-high 15 goals and added five assists and Heenan had a goal and seven assists.
Sophomore Daniel Fuentes, junior Ismail Mohamed and senior Corentin Charles were all Valley division second team picks for West High.
Fuentes had six goals and a team-high 10 assists and Mohamed had six goals and an assist.
Sophomore Christian Kim and senior Ruichar Medina each earned honorable mention honors for West High.
Saul was named Mississippi Division athlete of the year after leading the Lightning with 23 goals and added four assists while helping Liberty High win the first state title in program history.
Junior Haider Nasr and sophomore Roman Riggs joined Saul on the Mississippi Division first team.
Nasr had five goals and six assists and Riggs was third on the team with 11 goals and matched Nasr with a team-leading six assists.
Junior Flori Gembo and senior Forrest Saul were both second-team selections in the Mississippi Division.
Gembo ranked second on the team with 16 goals and had five assists and Saul had two goals.
Senior Zach Nielsen and junior Quinlan Lawrence were both honorable mention honorees for the Lightning.
City High had seven players earn all-division honors in the Valley Division.
Seniors Alima Mmunga and Emmitt Hansen and sophomore Jack Dancer were all first-team selections for the Little Hawks.
Hansen led City High with five goals and five assists while Mmunga had four goals and three assists.
Seniors Andrew Lopez and Jerry Mwenemkamba were both named to the Valley Division second team.
Lopez had a goal and Mwenemkamba had two goals and an assist for the Little Hawks.
Sophomore Jackson Nichols-Lindsey and senior Barick Makabi both earned honorable mention status.
